Essay Instructions: THE DIRECTIONS AS THEY ARE EXACTLY ON THE HAND OUT:

paper topic on Troilus and Cressida-

In the riverside edition, the textual notes that follow the play reprint a prefatory advertisement that appeared in the first quarto. The unknown author praises the play extravagantly and states in emphatic terms that the play is a witty comedy, adding that "Amongst all" of Shakespeare's comedies, "there is none more witty then this."

Consider now that Troilus and Cressida was written probably within two years of Much Ado About Nothing, which from the beginning has been regarded as one of Shakespeare's wittiest comedies. So here is the problem: what do these plays have in common? Take any approach you wish, coming at the plays through theme, dramatic structure, lanuage, plot, character- exhaust one before going to the next, make sure to be in depth and coprehensive.

Please, no long winded introductions or preambles like we disscussed in class. Assume your reader knows both plays and needs onle to be reminded of specific details and speeches. Four to six pages should do the job; the papers are due at class time.
