Essay Instructions: Pretend you are a modern social worker, educator. environmentalist or advisor to the president. I dentify and attack an evil you see in the world today and write your own " Modest Proposal" for its solution- a propsal so outrageous that readers will see at once the serity of the problem. Remember that some readers may miss your irony and attack you for being insensitive, just as some people attacked swift. To lessen this possibility. make your moral outrage clear by the sheer outrageousness of your exaggerations.
In your "propsal" be sure to follow the path laid out by Swift. be sure to exaggerate your problem so that its sounds as if it is of : National Importance" that this problem be solved. Describe the depths to which this problem has spread. Then clearly identify your proposed solution, making it as outrageous as your imagination will allow. the point is propose something so bad that people would want ti find something better. once you have identfied your proposal, you must support it using ethical, logical, and emotional appeals. you must make your solution sound believable, and these appeals are the only way to accomplish that goal. Finally , you must identify and dismiss other, more realistic, solutions to the problem. list them but don't explain them. think of real possible solutions. then close your essay with a simmple closing thought that supports your proposal.
Things to Remember:
(1)be sure to create an outrageous solution that can serve as the focus of your entire essay. Unimaginative, boring solutions lead to boring essays. let your imagination run wild.
(2)Make sure you include specific appeals to help support your solution. as a Bare Minimun, you should include at least one ethical appeal, one logical appeal, and one emotional appeal.
(3)be sure to proofread your essay for any spelling or grammar errors. do not trust your computer to do the work for you.
(4)there is no minimun requred length for this essay
(5)Pretend there is a little person sitting next to you asking " Why"?" you need to explain you appeals to that depth.

Title: My own Modest Proposal

Total Pages: 2 Words: 615 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: You have now read Jonathan Swift's shocking A Modest Proposal of 1729, attacking the deplorable state of poverty in which many Irish citizens found themselves due to England's accumulated repressive legal measures and the absentee landlords. Swift used all his powers of satire and irony to bring an entire society's attention to focus on what he saw as the most pressing social issue of his time, and his essay remains amongst the most often studied satirical texts in the English Language.

Now it is your turn to follow in Jonathan's footsteps. One does not have to look far to see that many ills surrounded us in 2011. Now your job will be to choose the societal problem(Local or Global)which you see as the most pressing , and you will present an outrageous, ironic solution to the situation. In the process, you will use the three rhetoric devices that Swift employed: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos, and you will follow the same organizational structure in your essay as Swift's.

Societal Problem I chose: Global Warming
Satirical Solution: Keep on using gas to operate cars, and stop thinking of electrical , and H20 operated machines.
