The final paper is an opportunity for you to develop research skills and combine them with all of the paper-writing skills we have discussed in class, such as developing a strong thesis (a crucial part of the paper), supporting that thesis with relevant examples, and closely reading a text with thoughtful analysis.
The research paper’s topic is entirely up to you, within the framework of American stories and culture. Remember that this is a literature class and your paper must be a discussion of literature and its relationship to society. Explore a theme you find in one or more texts and explain, with support from other essays and articles, how it reflects a particular tension in American culture and/or society. This theme could be social, artistic, economic, political, religious, racial, sexual, etc., as long as it appears in an American text and reflects a part of American culture.

Topic:

How diverse society has become and how more things have become acceptable (comparing 1900 to 2013)(gay marriage, immigrants, etc)

Sources:

3 Primary sources (books, tv shows(modern family, friends, etc), movies)
2 Secondary sources (articles, blogs, etc)

Relate sources to topic and be able to back up the information with the texts and quotes used.
