Essay Instructions: Death as a Theme in Oliver Twist
Thesis: Throughout Oliver Twist, an orphaned child experiences many extreme misfortunes (a gruesome murder, a manhunt, and a hanging); therefore, causing death to become a recurring theme in the novel; however, he survives the unbelievable misery of the situation, providing insight into the lives of the poor in the 1830s.
Revised version:
In Oliver Twist, Dickens provides moving insight into the lives of the 1830’s poor community through the extreme misfortunes of an orphaned child; therefore causing death to become a recurring theme in the novel.
