Essay Instructions: MIC100 - Microbiology
MODULE 1 - SLP

For this module you are to do the following:

Module I. Select a pathogenic and a nonpathogenic microorganism for the SLP. Provide a general description of the microorganisms and the reasons you selected it for the SLP. Be sure to use the scientific name for the microbes selected for the SLP. (Also the genus and species of each organism must written in italics. The genus of the organism is always capitalized while the species is not capitalized. For example, Actinomyces bovis.) Discuss the ecological niche that each microorganism is found in its natural environment.

An ecological niche is that area or space in the environment where a specific species of microorganisms can survive and reproduce. "Certain combinations of environmental conditions are necessary for individuals of each species to tolerate the physical environment, obtain energy and nutrients, and avoid predators." (Pidwirnery, 2006) For more information go to: Concept of Ecological Niche athttp://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/9g.html. You can also go tohttp://www.answers.com/topic/ecological-niche for more information.

Be sure you understand the difference between a pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganism.

Definition of Pathogenic and Opportunistic Microorganisms

Pathogenic Microorganisms are defined as: Microorganisms which have virulence factors and can cause disease in hosts with a normal defense capacity. Virulence factors may involve resistance to nonspecific host defense factors.

Opportunistic Microorganisms are defined as: Microorganisms which only can cause disease if host resistance is (sufficiently) decreased.
Only opportunistic microbes which can reach high concentrations in the digestive tract because of decreased colonization resistance and then pass through the epithelial barrier of the gut translocate; e.g. migrate through the gut mucosa in such numbers (high enough) that they can be isolated/cultured from the mesenteric lymph nodes (spleen and liver), some autochthonous bacteria are opportunistic.

In subjects with an unaltered defense capacity, the great majority of the species present in the lumen, can not be cultured from the gut associated lymphoid tissues (GALT) although they may live in much higher numbers in the intestines than required for opportunistic microbes to translocate. Translocation of bacteria can occur with similar intensity throughout the gut, but more bacteria are killed in the process of translocation across the lower part of the intestinal tract.
