Is a homeless man who refuses to allow police to take him to a city shelter on a cold night simply trying to live independently or is he "crazy"? People have a tendency to treat behavior that irritates or threatens them not simply as "difference" but as deviance(the recongnized violation of cultural norms)-even as mental illness. Which can involve primary deviance, retrospective labeling, or projective labeling.
Psychiatrist Thomas Szasz charges that people are too quick to apply the label of mental illness to conditions that simply amount to a difference we don't like. The world is full of people whose differences in thought or action may irritate others, but such differences are no grounds for defining someone as sick. Such labeling, Szasz claims, simply enforces conformity to the standards created by people powerful enough to impose their will on others.
Most mental helalth professionals reject the notion that mental illness is a fiction. But they do agree that it is important to think critically about how we devine "difference". First, people who are mentally ill are no more to blame for their condition than people who suffer from cancer or some other physical ailment. In other words, having a mental or physical illness is no grounds for being blamed as "deviant" Second, ordinary people without the knowledge to diagnose mental illness should avoid applying labels such as "crazy" to those who simply differ from them. Otherwise, we unfairly use powerful labels to try to encourage people to conform to our own standards of behavior.
Labeling theory, particularly the ideas of Szasz and goffman, helps explain an important shift in the way our society understands deviance. Ove the last fifty years, the growing influence of psychiatry and medicine has let to the medicalization of deviance, the transformation of moral and legal deviance into a medical condition.

I need for the infor on deviance and the label of mental illness to be included in the report. And if possible primary deviance, retrospective labeling, and/or projective labeling. So that sociology can be tied into my research paper and associate to the stigma associated with mental illness in our society.

Read and analyze the article titled Effects of Serious Mental Illness and Substance Abuse on Criminal Offenses for analysis. Within the article summary and analysis, include the following:

However, data banks such as ProQuest offer scholarly journals and are organized in a manner that allows the researcher to quickly find articles meeting the search parameters. Magazines and newspapers are secondary sources and are generally written for the general public, not a professional. Overall, books are secondary sources, such as textbooks; however, they may be a primary source. An example would be an author who discusses a research project that the author conducted.

The paper must be two to three pages in length (excluding the title and reference page), and formatted according to APA style.
