Essay Instructions: Memoirs and oral histories are sources that, when reliable, can bring you very close to the time, place, and people of any historical period. Select Sledge's work on Okinawa in With the Old Breed and answer the following question:

According to the source you used, what exactly was the "real war"? We have images from books, scholarship, films, memorials, and testimonials of what World War II was like in theory and in practice. For the United States, it was the "good war," the conflict that made this country a superpower. Using your source, can you find the real war?

Argument Essay contains a clear argument?i.e., lets the reader know exactly what the author is trying to communicate.

Evidence Provides compelling and accurate evidence that convinces reader to accept main argument. The importance/relevance of all pieces of evidence is clearly stated. There are no gaps in reasoning?i.e., the reader does not need to assume anything or do additional research to accept main argument.

Counter-Evidence The author considers the evidence, or alternate interpretations of evidence, that could be used to refute or weaken his/her argument, and thoughtfully responds to it.

Sources

Author exceeds requirements for type and amount of sources as defined by the assignment. Author effectively utilizes sources for both evidence and counter-evidence for argument.
S/He conveys to reader why selected sources are vital for topic.

Citations All evidence is properly cited in footnotes or endnotes.

Organization Essay contains an intro, main body, and conclusion. Introduction lays out main argument and gives an outline of what the reader can expect in the essay. The conclusion brings everything together, acknowledges potential shortcomings of the paper, and gives the reader a sense of what further work might be done to advance the subject matter described in the paper.

Clarity and Style All sentences are grammatically correct and clearly written. No words are misused or overused. Technical terms, words from other languages, and words from other historical periods are always explained. All information is accurate and up-to-date. Paper has been spell-checked AND proofread (ideally by you and somebody else), and contains no errors.

Start with a short paragraph that includes detail, action, interaction between characters, or set
description that “establishes” the tone or theme of your piece. Use the establishing shots in the memoir, Angela’s

 Specific, concrete detail and sensory imagery
A memoir needs the same detail that fiction uses. Show your reader objects, sights, sounds, aromas,
textures, and flavors of your world (look at the lists we made to give you ideas). Certainly use details to
establish the time period: Don’t write, “It was 1978.” Instead, say something like, “In the background I
could hear the theme song of ‘Laverne and Shirley’ announcing its arrival on the television set.”
 Dialogue
Don’t tell us what you and your characters say. Let us hear them saying it. Try to capture the flavor of
the character’s individual speaking style. Again, look at the lists and think about how Frank McCourt
uses dialogue to flesh out character. Use your handout to be sure you’re punctuating your dialogue
correctly.
 At least one “Exploded Moment”
Use the same technique that filmmakers use when they slow down time. Provide all the detail you can
about what you see, smell, hear, taste, think, and feel for a small moment in time.
 At least one instance of stylistic repetition
Model your repetition after the samples we looked at in class: Frank McCourt and Lisa Kogen
 One thesis/truism
So what? What did you get out of the experience? How has it colored your life? What can someone
else get out of it? The event need not have been life changing in order for there to be some significance.
The point may be serious, humorous, or a little of both. If there’s no thesis, no reflective quality, it’s a
story rather than a memoir.
Warning: This paper is not to be written as an essay typically would. If your thesis is at the end of the
first paragraph, you’re probably not telling a very good story. Your thesis will probably come at the
end or, preferably, will be implicit rather than explicit.
In addition, the memoir demonstrates a mature command of stylistic maturity. AND Careful editing

Essay Instructions: Write a memoir, a true story, about some part of your life. It can be a single event or a series of closely linked events.It is important that the event involves some sort of conflict and represents a sort of turning point and is significant to the reader because it reveals something universal that the reader can relate to. Show a change a mind or achange of heart, a discovery, or a dissapointment, or a decision. It is very important that an appropriate mood is established and that the characters are revealed through interesting incidents, setting details and dialogue. It is extremely important that the memoir is structured properly and that there is a setup which introduces the context of the story and plot developments that procedd logically to a resolution. Please write from a female perspective or something that is a universal experience for men or women. Thank you!
