Title: Medical School personal statement

Essay Instructions: "In 300 words or less, state why you want to become a physician and what you can bring to the world of medical health in today's multicultural society" - This is the question stem

I was hoping to still use the Jonier story because I think it was great and ver personable. I trimmed it down a bit to get it to their desired max of 300 words, although I stopped at a certain point because I felt it was starting to really take a way the heart of the essay. I would still like to use the Jonier story, but if you feel as if you need to go in a different direction I understand.

They said 310 would be the absolute maximum.

This is what I trimmed it down to......
I looked at this young boy?slouching, defiant, tense and trying his best to ignore me?and I saw myself, 15 years ago. I too was a stubborn adolescent, who had difficulty assimilating to the struggles inherent to first-generation English speakers. Looking back at the resolution in the young man?s face who I was supposed to be tutoring, all of my own resolve solidified and I renewed my commitment to help him?despite his best efforts to the contrary.
Jonier was the young boy I had the pleasure of working with for two years during my tenure at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America. Like me, he suffered from the fact that English was not his native language, and was labeled one of the worst adolescents in the program. I realized that his language barrier was largely the cause for all of his behavioral, social and scholastic issues, and realized that it would take someone with a firm commitment to helping others to keep him from becoming another casualty of poor socio-economic conditions?I resolved to become that person.
My two years with Jonier helped me realize my purpose in life?assisting others and giving them a chance to overcome unfortunate life circumstances. As I spent time with him each week, taking him out to eat and working through his school assignments, I found my passion for helping others. I believe that the principle way I can continue to do so is by laboring through medical school, becoming a doctor, and gaining the requisite knowledge to hone my talents to become a successful practitioner in the medical field.
In the final weeks of my time working with Jonier, I was able to see a tangible difference in his interactions with others and his zest for life in general. He now had a better understanding that hard work and focus could help him overcome his circumstances, much as it enabled me to overcome similar circumstances. I truly believe that my acceptance into Ross University School of Medicine will enable me to gain the necessary skills and talents required to continue impacting the lives of others, by not only providing them with proper medical care but also a proper perspective on life?s vicissitudes and the way to triumph throughout them.
