My topic involves encouraging my place of employment (in this case a hospital) to consider my proposal for changing current policy and procedure to an evidence-based proposal practice that will help to decrease hospital acquired infections through indwelling medical devices; I.., urinary catheters, central lines, PICC lines, peripheral IV lines, etc.
My idea was to encourage nurses to adhere to practice guidelines for caring for such lines. Perhaps institute proper labeling of all lines with identifiable colored coded labels, that would ALERT the nurse to: dressing change, catheter change date, flushing of catheter, education of care of line, aseptic technique, perianal catheter care, etc. The primary deflection to hospital acquired catheter acquired urinary tract infection (CAUTI's) is; limited use and perhaps no use at all. Central line infections occur due to lack of proper aseptic maintenance including dressing changes same for PICC lines and regular IV lines.
