Title: Response heathers

Total Pages: 2 Words: 589 Sources: 1 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Write a response discussing the relationship of Veblen's article (Thostein Veblen, "conspicuous Consumption", in the consumer society reader, Juliet B. Schor and Douglas Holt (ONLY pg 187-204)) to Heathers Movie(directed by michael Lehmann, 1989.

And write a response to this comment(only half page)
Unlike the movies Pretty in Pink and Clueless, Heathers was quite unexpected and left me in shock but I enjoyed that fact that it was not your typical teenage girl film. It definitely felt like a psychotic 1980’s version of Mean Girls but with an addition of killing involved and tackling the topic of teenage suicide. Not only does Veronica having a different name other than Heather differentiate her from the three, but also from the very beginning it is evident that Veronica wants nothing more than to be free from the Heathers, questioning their cruelty towards their classmates. Wealth and a leisure lifestyle (example: Veronica croquet game set up in her backyard and well groomed parents) is the only factor that Veronica and the three share in common and the only thing she is consuming from this so-called “friendship” is popularity that Veronica never used to acquire. She misses Betty and the life she used to have before joining the Heathers but the consumption of popularity wins her over. Veronica does want to keep hold of her popularity but would consult her inner most feelings (these feelings then elevating to a number of murders) with JD, who she is completely fascinated by from the very start. Near the end of the movie, I was left without words as to what to say with JD’s quote, “The only place where different social types can genuinely get along with each other is in Heaven.” This quote can somewhat relate to Veblen’s Conspicuous Consumption where he talks about the harsh division of classes.
In ConspicuousConsumption, Veblen begins by dividing the luxuries and comforts of the leisure class to the working class. He defines conspicuous consumption as power, valuable goods, and etiquette. Veblen quotes, “Gentle blood may be transmitted without goods enough to afford a reputably free consumption at one’s ease. Hence results a class of impecunious gentlemen of leisure, incidentally referred to already.” (191) He explains that the leisure class begins to further develop and differentiations arise. In this case, Veronica would be the “half-caste gentleman” where she yearns and consumes Heathers popularity but can never be what Heather is, just a different version of her. In Veblen’s idea of femininity he quotes “In order to impress these transient observers, and to retain one’s self complacency under observation, the signature of one’s pecuniary strength should be written in characters which he who runs may read” (197) very much relates to the scene when Heather Chandler, in means of expanding her horizons and retain her power image, takes Veronica to a Remington frat party. Heather sells herself to keep her reputation but Veronica is not moved.

If you use quotes add the page numbers of the book only the pages 187 to 204. You can find the book online google books. Send it when you are done please thanks
