Title: Literary Comparison

Total Pages: 3 Words: 1064 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: You will write an analysis on Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” and Robert Olen Butler’s “Jealous Husband Returns in the Form of Parrot.” You should think about two texts that can be compared in terms of formal elements, i.e. character development, plot, setting, etc.
The First Paragraph -The first paragraph should present a brief (7 or 8 sentences) setup of the texts, as well as a claim to be proven about the similarities/differences between them (thesis). It should also provide a topic summary/itinerary. This is often called the “because” part of your thesis. Here, it would consist of the general points of comparison you want to explore to prove your thesis
The Body Paragraphs
The body paragraphs should specifically discuss the points of comparison and contrast that you interpret as proving your thesis. If the point of comparison/contrast you are discussing involves similar/different character development, or perhaps similar/different tones, that significantly shape the texts, identify the point accordingly.
Each paragraph should have a well-identified focus/topic, present evidence from the texts to make the topic concrete, and provide analysis of the evidence that details for the reader exactly how the evidence works to support the topic. In other words, how are you interpreting the evidence, and how does that interpretation support your topic and your thesis?
You may need to develop each point over more than one paragraph. If so, try to identify several subtopics as focal points, or focus your paragraphs on specific pieces of evidence and interpretation, using transitions to logically tie dependent paragraphs to their topic paragraph. This is preferable to using long, unfocused, or unwieldy paragraphs to develop a complex topic!
The Conclusion - The conclusion should provide a BRIEF summary of your argumentative path to proving your major claim. However, it should go beyond mere summary and also address the consequences/implications of your argument. In other words, it should specifically inform your readers why your argument makes a difference (it answers the question “So what?”). Finally, it should provide a sense of completion and satisfaction for the reader.
