Essay Instructions: I need a (4)four-page essay on the American Literature course.
There are four separate topics that need to be answered.
Please answer one question per page.
I’ll include all the literature materials (short stories, poems, etc.).


1) Read the “Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford and “A Narrative of the Captivity” by Mary Rowlandson.
Although they write about very different events, both Mary Rowlandson and William Bradford focus on the values and qualities of Puritanism that help them to cope with hardship. Discuss their similarities regarding their attitudes toward God and their responses to hardship.


2) Persuasion influences opinion through a combination of logical reasoning and emotional manipulation. Read the “Speech to the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry and “The Crisis, No. 1” by Thomas Paine.
Select a phrase or image from each selection and describe both the emotional overtones and the message of these statements.
Here is an example:

Selection: Speech to the Virginia Convention

Phrase/Image: bind and rivet upon us those chains...

Emotional Overtones: The statement implies that the English are making prisoners or slaves of the Americans. It seems to say that the Americans still have a chance to escape from the chains because they haven't been riveted yet.

Message: Henry would like the Americans to seize the moment and begin the fight for freedom now.


3) The Age of Reason began in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with philosophers and scientists who called themselves Rationalists. Rationalism is the belief that human reason should determine all opinions and courses of action. In your opinion, would Patrick Henry or Thomas Jefferson be considered a rationalist?

Choose one writer and write one or two paragraph(s) explaining your answer. Support your ideas with at least two specific examples from the selections (“Speech to the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry or “The Autobiography: The Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson.


4) The writers, Jonathan Edwards and Anne Bradstreet, are concerned with universal questions about existence and the nature of being. Both in their lives and in their writings, they seek answers to questions such as: What is my purpose in life? How can I influence the course of my life? What happens when I die?

Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting their views about one of these universal questions. Make at least two references to the selections to support your ideas.

Selections: “Here Follow Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10, 1666” by Anne Bradstreet and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards.

Essay Instructions: Explain how Mary Rowlandson, Hannah Dustin, and Mary Jamison, were each in their own way, able to cope with their captivity. • Analize the writing. explain the author's sensibilities and ideas—as expressed through writing.
• Do not use plot summary! Assume the reader has read the work but does not understand it as fully as you do. Therefore, you must explain your view.
• State a thesis about the topic, and then support that thesis with abundant specific citations from the literature and from literary critics. (provide at least one direct passage from the literature per paragraph).
• Essay should be five full pages, excluding Works Cited page.
• Textual evidence from the literary work to support analysis and literary approach.
• Cite a minimum of four critical sources. The literary text is not one of these critical sources, but it, too, should be on the Works Cited page. In text citations should be in MLA format

Unacceptable Sources
•Reference books with “condensed” articles on the subject. Examples of unacceptable sources include Masterplots, Poetry Criticism, Short Story Criticism , Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, Nineteenth Century Criticism, Cliffs Notes, Monarch Notes, Sparks Notes, and other general comment sources.
• Be sure to introduce each critical source within your text. Provide the author’s full name and the title of the critical work you are using. Ex. Harold Bloom, author of The Critical Interpretations of Billy Budd, asserts “Melville’s protagonist is not autobiographical in either context or content”(238)

•Submission Checklist.
1.Introduction is 4-6 sentences and contains a Thesis (usually the last sentence or two). In some cases, a two-paragraph intro is acceptable.
2.Thesis makes an interpretive claim about the literature.
It should reflect a “theme” in the work. Remember that theme is not merely one word, like “death,” but, rather, it expresses an attitude about that subject.

3.Body Paragraphs have topic sentences that support the thesis. They provide direct evidence from the literary work.
They use proper in-text citations.
They explain the relationship between evidence and your interpretation.
4.Conclusion is 4-6 sentences and reasserts the central idea, which by this point has been sufficiently argued. It ends with general comments on the literature.
5.Works Cited page is accurate and in MLA format and numbered as the last page of your research paper.
6.All sources are Internet sources.
7.All sources have been introduced within the text: author’s full name and the title of the work you have used. You are establishing source credibility.

Essay Instructions: In the ear of contact and colonization, when Europeans, Africans, and indigenous Americans encountered one another in a sustained way, it was not all that uncommon for people to be taken captive by strangers and held for a period of time, sometimes temporarily for purposes of exchange, in other cases permanently. In such cases, the shock of captivity was often followed by a period of adjustment, in which the captive must adapt to the unfamiliar habits, customs, and practices of the captors.

This essay is to compare the captivity experiences of Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano by choosing one aspect of their captors’ culture – for instance, religious practices, labor patterns, foodways, or family life – and use this aspect of culture as a way to describe and explain the differences in their experiences.

Do you see Rowlandson’s and Equiano’s attempts to understand and/or adjust to their captors’ culture as similar, or were they quite different? In either case, explain the reasons for the similarities and differences, and what you think these patterns reveal about the emerging human relationships in the Atlantic world.
