The textbook gives several possible explanations for the universality of marriage and for the universality of incest taboos. Briefly describe each of the theories; then pick the explanation for the existence of these universal behaviors that seems to best support their existence. Give the reasons why you think it might be the best explanation. Alternately, you can pick more than one explanation and give your reasons why you think both might be correct.

Marriage, unlike mating, has the force of society behind it, i.e., it is socially approved. Marriage is almost, but not quite, universal (see the Nayar). Several theories have been advanced as to why marriage is almost universal, and why all societies have incest taboos within the family. Marriage takes many different forms throughout the world, revolving around who should marry whom, and how many can one marry.
Arising from marriage are types of residence patterns. Residence patterns are related to subsistence patterns. Some societies have unilineal rules of descent (either patrilineal or matrilineal), while others have ambilineal rules of descent. Still other societies, such as our own have bilateral rules of descent. Societies having unilineal descent may have combinations of lineages, clans, phraties, and moieties. Unilineal descent groups have many functions and are commonly associated with non-commercial, food producing, societies.

Essay Instructions: I wrote an intro to my dissertation (attached) that apparently isn't academic enough... there are a lot of points that i made and didn't back up... I was trying to decide if I should use the editing service or this one just because I really wanted to start over, but keep a similar theme as what I have already written without the "non academic tone" and the points that are not backed up with research.

Overall, I'm writing a doctoral dissertation where I'm creating a nondenominational marriage prep program that will hopefully be more effective then the ones already out there... Part of the problem why these programs don't work, (as evidenced by the staggering divorce rates) is because whats out there isn't addressing the need of MODERN couples... also, generally, people don't even go in the first place for various reasons.

What I'm trying to show in my research, is that in order to finally do something about the divorce rates, marriage needs to be modenized and updated for the times... part of that is motivating/advocating for marriage prep bc its been proven to reduce the odds of divorce... AND we need a program that is modern, nondenominational, Focused on Positive Psychology (strengths based), Educational (teaching tools and techniques), Knowing where/what kind of family you're from and integrating that into your marriage (family systems), and most imortant ***cusrtomizing the marriage to who we are and what we need rather then trying to fit ourselves into how society or others think our marriage should be.***
