Instructions
Assuming the demographic changes about Hispanics are accurate, comment on how this shift changes the segmentation in the grocery and the fast food industries. For example, if a grocery store that you visit frequently currently has about 15% of its space dedicated to Hispanics should that be changed now in light of the demographic research? Be sure to use key demographic and lifestyle facts and figures about these markets and their consumers.

Hello,

I faxed you the Harvard Case Study: Xerox Book In Time (#9-599-119). I need the following questions answerd:

1. What value does Book-In-Time (BIT) create in the Distribution Value
Chain
for books?

2. Who will benefit from Book-In-Time? Who will be threatened? What
would you estimate themarket size (in number of books) for Book-In-Time to be?

3. What are the options available to Xerox? The pros and cons of each?
Whatis the financial payoff (in revenue and/or profits) to Xerox for each
option?

4. What should Xerox do?

Be sure your analysis/write-up contains a marketing action plan.

In addition, provide some brief quantatitive analysis (e.g. break even, profit margin ect.).

Here are some things I pulled out of the case which may assist you with the write up:

Cost of the Book-in-Time:

$5M of R&D

$2M Opex for last two years

Top 12 publishers account for 85% of overall US book publishing market

Large publishers have repositioned themselves for the onset of electronic publishing

Printing market = $20B

Top 25 account for 25% of industry

Wholesalers: very difficult business to make money

Retailers: 4 chains account for 75% of market share

BIG ADVANTAGE OF BOOK IN TIME WAS RUN LENGTHS OF 1,000 OR LESS

SMALL RUNS SHOULD BE TARGETED?

OUT OF PRINT MARKET

Another reason to target small runs of 1000 or less is that Xerox has a competitive advantage over IBM

I think table D is key which shuld provide data for some quantative analysis:

It shows that Book-in-Time unit costs are better than the other options for short runs. According to the first paragraph on pg 12, the biggest advantage of the BIT system was the cost for run lengths os 1,000 or less. However, when I look at table D ? it looks like at 1,000 the BIT system is not the best cost. What am I missing here, fixed costs?

Anyway, the target market would be small runs. Not just the tail end of a typical book cycle, but even at the front end ? review copies, complimentary copies, and galley proofs. Even before books went out of print, each subsequent edition was for small lots as well.

Huge advantage when selling this to target customer for the small runs ? instead of a 8 ? 12 week turnaround because small runs are usually sent out to the Far East for cheaper labor costs, they are talking about a 24-hour shipment. I BELIEVE THIS FALL UNDER THE P OF PRODUCT.

Target Customer:

How about the Trade Book Publishers?:

According to Trade Book Publishers, 1996: Analysis by Category, the top 12 trade book publishers accounted for nearly 85% of the overall U.S. book publishing market.
