Essay Instructions: The Proposal Essay (i want to talk about "Major Depressive Disorder")
Description
Write a proposal argument that clearly states your opinion on a current topic and makes a proposal for change. One way to generate ideas for this assignment is to ask: What makes me mad? Begin making a list of those things that you'd like to see change. Choose a topic that affects us all and that others can do something about.

In this essay you will introduce the problem, give background information, present a proposal for change that includes feasible solutions, address the counterarguments, and motivate readers to do something about the problem.

Topic link between Projects 2 and 3

Your topic for Project 3 must be linked with the topics you chose for Project 1 and 2. Remember the example sequence of assignments from Students A and B?

Here is an example sequence of assignments from Student C:
Student C chose to write Project 1 about an incident in which he was arrested and held in jail for the possession of an ounce of marijuana. For Project 2, the student chose to evaluate the laws concerning the possession of medicinal marijuana in the United States. For Project 3, Student C wrote a proposal argument for the decriminalization of marijuana for medicinal use.
How does the topic of your Proposal Argument link back to the Evaluation Argument and Memoir? Be prepared to discuss this in class.

Your proposal argument should include the following:

Title:
Choose a catchy title that introduces the topic of your essay
Introduction:
Grab the reader's attention with a strong lead-in. Be clear about who your audience is. For example, begin with an anecdote, a personal experience, a vivid description, dialogue, a quote, or a startling statistic to appeal to the readers.
Identify the problem at hand.
Provide necessary background information about the problem if needed for understanding.
Body:
Present your solution to the problem. How will it work? Why is it the best solution? Why won?t other solutions work as well as yours?
What are the steps in implementing your solution? How will it solve the problem?
What are the positive consequences of this solution?
How is your solution feasible?
Address the opposition. Show that you've thoroughly considered the strongest opposing viewpoints to your argument by presenting a counterargument.
Conclusion:
End with a call to arms, an anecdote, a phrase, or a quote to urge the reader into action. You may even want to state exactly what the reader needs to do.
You do not need to state "in my opinion" or "I think" in this assignment once you've stated your opinion in the thesis statement. It will be clear from your introduction that the essay is your opinion. Remember to use the tactics of pathos, ethos, and logos in your essay.

The length should be 3 to 5 pages, double-spaced (12 pt.)

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to craft a successful proposal argument using the tactics of persuasion learned in the class. You will also demonstrate how you can link your proposal argument back to the topics of your memoir and evaluation argument.

Final Draft Submission Directions
The final draft of this assignment must be turned in to the instructor as a private discussion topic in the following format:

Microsoft Word-readable document
double-spaced (only two lines between paragraphs, not four)
1-inch margins
12 point Arial, Times New Roman, or Verdana font.
