Essay Instructions: Background Info: TV in the 1950s largely portrayed the middle class, white washed nuclear family. We see time after time the domestic housewife, happy, obedient and perfectly poised. However, another popular show of this time with a somewhat different representation was I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball was nearly 40 when this show originally debuted on television- quite a milestone for women just in her age alone. This show, first a radio show, later became a popular television show. In fact, it was so popular stores would close for her episodes with signs reading "We Love Lucy Too," and even phone companies would report drastic decreases in phone calls. Lucy was clearly no June Cleaver. In fact, episode after episode, we see Lucy attempting to break out of the home and into showbiz. Lucy, in later seasons of the show, was even the first pregnant woman on TV (but the word "pregnant" was not allowed to be used- they had to use the word "expecting" instead). The TV station also supposedly got a priest, rabbi and minister to look over all the scripts and approve them. Ironically more people tuned into the birth of little Ricky than the inauguration of Dwight Eisenhower. Lucy also fought the TV stations head on in letting Ricky play her husband (he was Cuban and did not represent the white washed images seen at this time). Ricky did not play her husband on the radio show and they were married in real life (that is why people argue they were allowed to be seen in later seasons in the same bed on TV- which was never sexual).

Assignment: Please watch the clip below and read the websites on Lucy. Think about the images you are seeing here. In this 2 page paper please consider these questions: How does Lucy’s character compare to other housewives on TV? What is the same? What is different? How was a show like “I Love Lucy” so successful during such a conservative time in terms of proper gender representations? Why is Lucy’s character non-threatening to society at this time? What does this episode say about prescribed gender roles? What does it say to women watching?
