Essay Instructions: Question :How did Europe Change over the Ancien Regime?

In 1661 Louis XIV announced that he would rule France by himself and then went on to dictate the nature of the life lived in France and fairly much the rest of Europe. In 1802, Napoleon I made a similar announcement and then went on to do the same thing. How had Europe changed in the century and a half between the assumption of power of Louis XIV and the assumption of power of Napoleon I? Write an essay in which you discuss the transformations that occurred in Europe in the social, political, economic and cultural spheres. At the conclusion of your essay, answer the question of whether the ways in which Napoleon I ruled was a continuation of the ways in which Louis XIV ruled, or whether Napoleon's assumption of power representated something entirely different.

In your essay you should spend time specifically discussing the transformations that took place in the social, political, economic and cultural aspects of life in Europe. Use your texts and the other assigned readings as sources of information for your assessments. Please remember to document your statements, i.e., cite from what source you drew the data for your argument. Your discussion in each of these areas will generate 10 percent of your grade (for a total of 40 percent). Your answer to the question about the similarities and differences between the rule of Louis and Napoleon will determine 30 percent of your grade. The final 30 percent of your grade on this exercise will be derived from the overall presentation of your essay and the logic and rigor of your argument.
