Behind traditions and rituals in ?The Lottery?

?The Lottery? by Shirley Jackson is a story about society and a tradition which picking a victim to be murdered by throwing pebbles. In ?The Lottery?, people of the village follow outrageous tradition and are numb to the violence. Author uses the setting and symbols contrasts to each other to establish this theme. The setting is symbolized in this story and foreshadows what is about to take place.

The description of the setting makes readers believe this is a normal happy little village on a beautiful summer day. ?The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blooming profusely and the grass was richly green.? The village sounds like somewhere people want to live. It has a grocery store, post office, bank, school, a coal business and a village square. However, in the end, the readers are able to feel dark and uneasy feeling. The peaceful village square becomes the site of homicide. The normal happy people become violent and evil. I consider that the irony of this act is that though the sacrifice is performed with good intention for their village, it is completely immoral. In addition I assume that they cannot allow themselves to withdraw from the tradition because they do not know any other way.

The barbaric nature of the lottery evokes the reader?s idea to think this have happened in ancient times when sacrificial rituals were current; such as virgins jumping into the volcano. However, from the references in the story readers know this is in the twentieth century. The Author uses this contrast of setting to show her point; society will hide behind traditions and rituals.
