Total Pages: 5 Words: 1516 Works Cited: 3 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: The five-county Los Angeles region has experienced incredible growth since the late 1800s. The population increased from only 19,000 in 1870 to 17.9 million in 2010. Los Angeles is the second largest urban region in the United States, and one of the ten largest urban regions in the world.

This week’s readings explore different aspects of the growth of the Los Angeles region. Hundley (2001) discusses the Los Angeles aqueducts and their contribution to regional urbanization and economic growth. Hise (2000) and Fishman (1987) focus on suburbanization and the spatial expansion of Los Angeles. Nelson (1959) and Soja (2000) provide broad overviews of metropolitan growth from the late 1800s into the 1900s.

Title: Los Angeles Hollywood

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1749 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Compose an anthology of seven quotations drawn from the texts. The anthology will consist of a preface, short commentaries on each quotation and a conclusion. The anthology should be governed by a theme that offers a way to unite together the diverse materials of the texts. The best anthology will be ones where the theme enables the student to inquire into the complexities of Los Angeles culture and literature and where both the structure and content manifest democratic thinking (i.e. the checking and balancing of representations and seeing an issue from multiple points of view).
Draw one quotation from each of the following seven texts. Present the quotation and cite the text and page number of the quote. Than provide your analysis of the quotation. The texts are:
John Fante, Ask the Dust
Nathanael West, The Day of the Locust
James Cain, Mildred Pierce
Karen Yamashita, The Tropic of Orange
Luis Rodriguez, The Republic of East LA
Yxta Maya Murray, Locaus
Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man
Analysis of the text: Write a commentary on each quotation that is between 3-5 sentences in length. The commentary should be more than a paraphrase of the passage. It should seek to illuminate the significance of the passage and connect the passage to other passages through comparisons and contrasts. The commentary should develop the theme of the anthology as a whole. It is vital in these commentaries to explicate the passage first and foremost from the point of view of its author rather than to offer your personal opinion. Consider the commentary an act of empathic listening and of comparative or contextual analysis. Seek to understand the passage in its own context rather than just declaring its personal significance to you. Comment on the language and specific details of the passage and make both comparisons and contrasts to other texts (the texts above) in the anthology. The first sentence of the commentary should seek to locate the passage specifically within the context of the text from which it is drawn.
Preface and Conclusion: Write 1 page preface to this anthology in which you introduce and explain the orchestrated theme of this anthology. The topic, concern, issue, or argument that governs selection of the quotations you use to compose this anthology. The preface should be similar to a presenting a thesis to a 5-7 page critical essay. The conclusion at least one paragraph should be a summary reflection about the anthology that also offers personal opinion about the significance of the topic to you. In short the conclusion can be something of Op-Ed piece of the topic. The task of this anthology is to find sources of unity in the diversity of the texts.

Please use only the 7 texts provided above. Thank you.
