Essay Instructions: Consider the title of A Lesson before Dying. In this novel Grant Wiggins teaches Jefferson how to be a man (does he?). Wiggins also tries to teach schoolchildren not to be like Jefferson. Meanwhile Wiggins seems to learn from Jefferson what it means to be a "youman." What exactly are these lessons? Taught by whom? How? What kinds of education are valued, in order to teach these lessons? Valued by whom? Why? And what kinds of education are seen as potentially dangerous or damaging or simply a waste of time? How does Ernest J. Gaines raise and address these questions in his novel? Please avoid writing a paper in which you simply list and describe any number of "lessons" taught and learned in Gainse's novel. Develop an argument a thesis, about an important lesson and try to persuade your reader what it is and why it is important enough to be thought of as included in the title of the novel.
