To many FDR is considered one of America's greatest presidents because of his handling of the ecomomy bringing the US out of the Great Depression. Many of his social programs such as the concept of social security and unemployment benefits, among others are still with us in 2005. On the other hand some see him as the devil himself. However, one of the things he tried to do (but failed) was to "pack" the US Supreme Court by changing the Constitution to allow for additional justices to be appointed. He did this so that he could appoint justices who would not declare his programs unconstitutional as the nine member court of the time had been doing..
Compare this to the support and the outcry of President Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court, John Roberts, announced this past week. In your opinion, what should be the qualifications be for a Supreme Court justice? What do you see the Senate's role in the confirmation process? Is the appointment of a Supreme Court justice the opportunity for the president to make a mark on his legacy or should he take the "pulse" of the country before deciding who to appoint? Essay Instructions: I need to choose a problem with politics and/or military on Turkey. This is what I came up with

Statement of Problem: The Conflict between the Turkish State and the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK).

Today the ongoing conflict between the Turkish State and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party also known as the PKK (Partiya Karkene Kurdistan). Conflict began in 1984 when PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan fled Syria to Italy to seek asylum and was arrested. His supporters held demonstrations which would eventually spread throughout Europe. A month before he was arrested, Ocalan was expelled from Damascus. He believed he could flee to Italy after an invitation from Italian leftists. He was forced to leave by the Italian government after heavy pressure from America and Turkey. He fled to Nairobi, Kenya and was eventually captured on February 16, 1999. Most western countries believe the conflict between Turkey and the PKK is the most serious problem in the Turkish Republic’s 77 years history. Turkey has aspirations to full integration the European institutions. Most westerners define the conflict as a matter of oppression and denial of rights by a majority group (Turks), of an ethnic minority (Kurds).

What is The Turkish Government doing to resolve the conflict?

The army and government both have acknowledge that the Kurdish issue cannot be solved through military means alone. Erdogan last year introduced a “democratic opening” to address Kurdish grievances and encourage peace. The government has pledged billions to develop the southeast, where incomes are a quarter of those in affluent western Turkey. It has also eased restrictions on the Kurdish language. Less than 20 years ago, Kurdish was completely banned. According to sources close to the matter, authorities in recent weeks have held talks with Ocalan, once unthinkable. But Erdogan may now wait until the 12011 election before making any significant and politically risky reforms.

That your analysis shows some insight into American (popular) culture,
That you present your analysis/argument on a web presence of your own making (such as a wiki, blog, or website).


Invention
Think about the audience you've chosen to address and about what impact you want to have. Imagine them as a friendly but skeptical audience, willing to be persuaded by a reasonable argument. Perhaps they are familiar with the topic or image you have selected but less conscious of its implications than they realize. Can you show them new connections and interpretations? Can you give them a new perspective?



Your project might take a form similar to some of our former projects. For instance, you might decide to argue for the negative or positive qualities of some cultural condition or cultural practice (such as the the essays on the Shrek films and laziness and video gaming below), in which case you are writing an evaluation. Or, you might decide to create a new category or redefine a category or genre of pop culture (such as the argument for "Vidlit" as a genre in "Of Sleuths and Starships" linked below), in which case you are writing a definition. Like our first two projects, this one is an analysis and you'll likely be borrowing from that experience as well. For instance, the articles on Shrek and "Vidlit," borrow strategies from the Advertising and Rhetorical Analysis assignments (think back as well to the day we spent analyzing the "Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare" episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - had we geared our analysis toward explaining how it reflects popular cultural conceptions on government assistance, it could have satsified the requirements of the Cultural Analysis assignment). Remember as well that many of the works we've read previously in class - e.g., "Why Johnny Can't Dissent," Fame Junkies, were themselves cultural analyses - they made arguments about contemporary culture (that consumerism has appropriated what used to be leftist strategies of resistance, that celebrity has become an addition for most Americans, respectively), and backed them up with analysis of cultural products and phenomenon.



Next, gather information about your subject. What aspects of an American mythology or cultural mores are the audience asked to identify with, and how are its characteristics embodied in the topic? What do most people seem to think about the topic? What else might it mean? Try to remain open as you gather more information about your subject: consider its parts; look at details; compare a variety of examples of it; look for evidence about the causes and effects of images; consider contrasts too. Think also about similar practices or artifacts in the culture and common factors that might account for them as well. Then, think about how this information can help you shape a thesis—an interpretation you wish to argue.


I really want to use Generation RX, and the use of precription drugs by teens. But it's up to you what it says about the american culture aspect (thats what im paying you for)

Essay Instructions: IMPORTANT: I have written less than half of this paper already. I will be emailing you what I've written so far. I want you to finish it. The paper is about the North's real motivation for attacking the South after the South left the Union. I am a leftist, so my position is that it was mainly to spread Capitalism and promote a different kind of slavery (wage slavery). I'm writing this for a Marxist teacher too. The part of the body I have already written talks the genuine opposition to slavery that existed in the North. The second half needs to be about Capitalist motivations and will hopefully include minor quotes from famous figures in the North (a Lincoln quote would be great). Use a decent number of quotations (at least five), but don't make them very long. Talk about historical industrial statistics and events too please. Obviously a closing needs to be written too.
