Title: Home office purchase project

Total Pages: 2 Words: 686 Works Cited: 7 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: AST 230 ?HOME OFFICE PURCHASES PROJECT?
For this project, you are to IMAGINE the following: You are a special projects manager for Virginia Tech (VT). You have just been given a very important assignment. The college is creating a new ?telecommuter? office for recruiting new students. One new full-time employee has been hired for this office, which will be based in her home. Your job is to completely furnish this office. Remember, the office is a completely-empty room. It has no furniture, hardware, software, or anything except finished walls, carpeting, plumbing, wiring, heating and air conditioning.
Your budget for this project is $2,900. You are expected to spend AS MUCH OF THIS MONEY AS YOU CAN WITHOUT GOING OVER BUDGET.
This project consists of a typed research report, references list, and purchases summary table.
Your research report must be a minimum of two full double-spaced typed pages. Your references and summary table are additional and do not count toward the required two page minimum. Be sure to research major purchases (such as hardware) before deciding to ?buy them.? Make certain to type your complete name at the top of your paper. Use 12 font.
Type a clearly-written summary explaining why you purchased what you did and the reasoning behind your purchases. For example, why did you choose one certain brand of computer over another? Do not base your purchases on price alone! Remember to comparison shop and look for customer satisfaction ratings. Use your local library, TNCC library, and internet search engines to help you research this project. Find magazine and/or internet articles that compare different brands of your major items (computers, printers, cameras). Simply going to a computer website (like www.dell.com or www.gateway.com) is not enough. Sites like these are helpful, but they are ?biased? sites. Obviously they want you to buy their computer. Your magazine articles should be no older than ONE YEAR OLD. HINT, HINT, HINT: I recommend physically going to a library and looking at hard-copies of a magazine called: Consumer Reports. Another good one is: PCWorld. I can almost guarantee that you will find what you need in these magazines (these magazines are examples of ?unbiased research?).
ANOTHER HINT, HINT, HINT: I just went to one of my favorite search engines, www.google.com. and typed in ?compare laptop computers.? One of the links is www.thelaptopauthority.com. An article entitled ?Compare Different Laptop Computer Reviews? appeared. This is exactly the kind of unbiased article that you should use. Remember that this office has one employee. She has specifically requested a laptop computer. Be sure to honor this request. Online shopping agents (such as bizrate.com or epinions.com) provide excellent info on comparison shopping. These are discussed in Chapter 11 in your textbook. Your textbook provides great information to help you make your purchases. Specifically, refer to pages TI-B1 ? TI-B8 (the green pages at the end of your book), and Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 11. Include a paragraph of information that you learned from actually going to a store that sells computers, software, and office furniture/supplies and TALKING with a sales rep. This could be a store like Office Max, hhgregg, Staples, or Best Buy. Be sure to include the NAME OF THE STORE, THE NAME OF THE SALES REP, AND THE DATE OF YOUR VISIT, in addition to summarizing what you learned from your visit to the store.
Be sure to include a list of your References at the end of this report. This References list will indicate all of the resources that you used to help you prepare your report. Be sure to list all references, including your magazine articles, websites, and your store sales representative information. The References section does not have to be fancy. Simply include the author?s name with last name first, then first name (if included). ?Name of the Article.? Name of the Magazine or Book. Date of publication, page numbers (if applicable). For your conversation with the sales rep, include his/her name (last name first if he/she provides a last name). Name of the store. Date of your visit to the store. Your three store or company website references would be referenced simply by listing the complete website address. The References list should be in alphabetical order. Your references are reviewed as part of the grading process. Mrs. Putnam should be able to clearly see at least three current magazine or unbiased internet articles; at least three different store or company websites; and information about at least one personal conversation with a sales representative. This is the first item graded when Mrs. Putnam grades your project.
Your references should use the following basic format:
Type the word REFERENCES center aligned at the top and then double space
Alphabetical order (based upon author's last name)
Hanging Indent format (if you know how to do this). If you do not know how to use this feature, this is not required.
Body should be single spaced, double space between entries.
Book title, magazine title in italics
Magazine article or internet article title in quotes.
If you only used certain page numbers of your source, include them at the end of the reference. You do not need to include the word ?page? or p. pgs. etc.
For example:
REFERENCES
Catlette, Caragh. ?Laptop Computer Comparisons.? http://www.communication.com (May 1, 2012).
Downs, Susan. ?Hot Color Laser Printers.? www.FirstGlimpseMag.com, March 2012, 40-41.
Salesman, Joe. Best Buy, June 23, 2012.
Thomas, Joe. ?How to Purchase Items for your Home Office.? Consumer Reports, April 2012, 10-16.
www.dell.com
www.hp.com
www.staples.com
Your research MUST include the following:
1. At least THREE UNBIASED magazine or internet articles (good magazines are Consumer Reports and PCWorld. Good unbiased websites include: www.howstuffworks.com and www.FirstGlimpseMag.com. This research can be done at a library or online).
2. At least THREE DIFFERENT store or company websites that you reviewed (such as www.bestbuy.com, www.dell.com, www.gateway.com, www.staples.com, www.hhgregg.com, www.hp.com).
3. At least one personal conversation with a sales representative in a technology-related store.
The last paragraph of this report must include the total amount you spent on all purchases. Try to use as much of the $2,900 as you can without going over. DO NOT INCLUDE TAX! (VT is a state agency; therefore, is exempt from taxes). Include shipping/handling charges. Deduct Rebates if you ?received? any.
WHAT ITEMS SHOULD YOU PURCHASE?
? One laptop computer
? One color, laser printer (that can handle printing professional-looking letterhead, envelopes, business cards, brochures, newsletters, and other recruitment projects)
? Digital camera
? Scanner (or all-in-one machine)
? iPhone (simply include the cost of the phone; do not include monthly cell fees)
? Any other hardware you would like
? Five Application Software packages (review Chapter 5 in your textbook): Purchase Microsoft Office 2010 as a suite. DO NOT PURCHASE Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher separately. This counts as ONE of your application software packages. Choose the other four application software packages you think your office will need. For the research value of this component of the project, please do not say that the software comes free with your computer. You must research and purchase at least five application software packages (of which MSOffice is one required package).
? At least two DIFFERENT Utility Software programs (see pages 183-188 in your textbook).
? Your computer will probably come preloaded with operating system software. You should not have to purchase this. However, be sure to indicate in your report what Operating system software comes with your computer.
? Office Furniture.
? Anything else you think would be helpful, nice, or needed for this new office.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE ANY OFFICE SUPPLIES AS A PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT. Additionally, you DO NOT need to include any monthly charges (such as fees for cable, cell phone, electricity, etc.).
Your research paper grade will be based upon the following things: you followed directions, you included all required purchases, knowledge of topic based upon what you have learned so far in this class and your research, you
did not go over your budget (but spent close to your budgeted amount), your paper is well written (contains well-written, grammatically-correct sentences) and has been carefully proofread, and your paper includes a References list with all required references and a summary table of all of your purchases.
At the conclusion of your paper (after your references), be sure to include your Summary Table. If you know how to create a table in Microsoft Word, please do so. Otherwise, simply type your information in easy to read columns. Your table should follow the basic format as indicated below:
SUMMARY TABLE
Your Name
Specific Item Name/Model Number
Where Purchased
Total Price
GRAND TOTAL
Please be aware that your summary table will probably be longer than the example given above.
There will be a link under Assignments where you will be able to submit your work. It will actually be submitted through blackboard rather than
email. Submission directions will be included. Please let me know if you have any difficulties submitting your project.
Please send me an e-mail if you have any questions about this project. Additionally, I will create a new Discussion Board Forum where you can go to ask questions of your peers concerning this project. You may respond to your classmates? questions. Your response may help several other students! I will monitor the discussion board over the next several weeks, and I will also respond to questions/comments.
THE PROJECT DUE DATE IS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4
NO LATER THAN 12 NOON. This research project is worth 20 percent of your final grade. Late projects will not be accepted. A zero on this assignment could be very detrimental to your final grade!
Please get started on this project today! Make certain to carefully follow all assignment directions. Also, make sure to research prior to deciding upon your purchases. This is especially important for your laptop computer and printer.

Total Pages: 10 Words: 4360 Sources: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: This research is for a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies Degree. This research is only a small potion of my whole paper. It should be about 10 pages in APA format. The exact question of my research paper is "Will the integration of technology in a second grade class improve student achievement in math? I teach in an urban school district where the students are of low income and many of the students don't have access to computers at home. This paper needs to include the definition of technology, powerpoint, smartboards, and laptop computers, the history of when technology started in education, the national picture which includes the budgets for technology and high stakes testing here in MA which is the MCAS test, conflicting views of using technology, the challenges and best practices which is a discussion of what has worked and not worked with technology in other school districts and finally a summary of the whole chapter. I will be faxing articles that I have found on this topic and other necessary information for the paper. The professor told us to use articles, the internet, and books. I also fax what the professor expects the chapter to look like in an outline form. I would like to use a money order.
There are faxes for this order.
