Essay Instructions: Using your developing information literacy skills, you will research the information necessary to write a research paper on the negative aspects of a loosely regulated labor market, using information from your local area, and the benefits of free labor markets. In the paper you will provide a factual review or summary of what experts contribute to the general knowledge of the topic.

The main objective of this research paper is to explore the labor market in your area (Philadelphia, PA) (If informationis needed by zip code 19103, 19144, 19138) and examine the benefits and negative aspects of a loosely regulated labor market. You will also demonstrate your academic integrity by properly crediting the authors and their ideas. In this way, you will develop your relational learning competency, which is best explained as the ability to transfer learning from one context to another. Through the summarization and analysis process, you will learn how to take your research and apply it within different contexts in order to develop a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the topic. This project is not an argumentative paper or an outline for a debate.

It is an expectation for this course that all written projects will follow the standards according to the conventions of the APA Style Manual.

Your research paper should include the following:

General Expectations: This research paper is to be a minimum of four to six pages (not including the title and reference page), typed and double-spaced. It should conform to all APA citation and paper format rules. Using parenthetical citations, paraphrases, block quotes, or a combination of such in your essay, you will need to cite from four (4) different sources: textbook, AFL-CIO Job Tracker Database (www.workingamerica.org/jobtracker/) and two sources of your choice. You will need to complete a reference page in addition to using in text citations to cite your sources correctly using the APA format.

The Labor Market
Most firms require labor to produce output. The number of workers to hire is often an important decision of the firm because it affects the costs and profits of the firm. Write a 2-3 page paper on the following issues:
1. In the context of your firm, discuss two factors that would increase your demand for labor. (Be sure to review Chapter 12 from the background section)
2. Is labor an fixed or variable cost in the short run? What are the fixed costs of your firm?
3. Explain the law of diminishing returns in your own words. This idea can be applied to other concepts in economics. Think about your own utility from consumption. Give a personal example of diminishing utility.
4. How is wage determined in any market? You can read the marginal productivity presentation on this topic prepared by the instructor to help you with your answer.
