Objective



The purpose of this project is to apply your critical-thinking skills to address the following concepts in a comprehensive paper. Do not simply respond to these items, but provide a fully reviewed paper about the future of unions. The items below provide guideline points:

What changes are needed for unions to maintain support from their membership, the community, and the employers?

Labor unions are experiencing a decline, which includes political influence and membership. How do politics influence membership decline?

What generational aspects (i.e., baby boomers, Generation X, Generation Y) have influenced labor unions and will continue to do so?

What other external dynamics are impacting labor unions? For example, how does the global workforce impact union strategies?

For unions, where were they, where are they, and where do they need to go to remain or regain an active and viable organization in the 21st century?

The objective of this paper is to share your professional understanding related to labor relations and unions base.

Prepare a paper which examines the following:

B. Examine the impact of changes in employee relations strategies, policies, and practices on organizational
performance.

C. Answer the question "Are unions still relevant in the United States?"

D. In addition your paper, be sure to touch on the campaign, the election, contract negotiations, grievance handling, arbitrations, labor relations, and a most recent strikes like the (supermarket strike).

F. Use at least four references from the reading assignment, Internet articles, Electronic Reserve Reading (ERR) articles, and/or HR journal articles to support your paper.

Essay Instructions: Labor, GDP, and the Firm

The most important resource for all firms is labor. In this SLP, we will look at the labor decisions of the firm. Please address the following questions in a 3-4 page essay.


1. Labor is an important factor of production for all firms. The most recent unemployment rate is estimated at 9% (January 2011). Economists have identified three types of unemployment. Which type would affect your firm. Explain. Be sure to review section 3 of Chapter 20 in the background readings.

2. Think about other employment issues such as outsourcing. Do you think your firm would benefit from outsourcing? If you chose a firm in which outsourcing is not feasible, you can still discuss the advantages (or disadvantages) of outsourcing.

3. If a U.S. firm hires foreign workers abroad, would these wages count in the U.S. GDP? (i.e. a Chinese citizen working in a Nike factory in China) Why or why not?

4. Based on the economic indicators studied in this module, what are your forecasts for your firm in terms of profit, employment, and production
