Title: Judge Dee of China

Total Pages: 6 Words: 2048 Bibliography: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Title of paper to be: "Judge Dee's Unquenchable Thrust for Finding the Truth, When Solving Legal Cases".

Sources(2), #1- "Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee"
(DEE GOONG AN)
Translated by Robert Van Gulik
Published by Dover Publications, Inc. 1976
#2- "THE WORLD RELIGIONS"
by
Huston Smith
Published by HarpersCollins Publishes, Inc. 1991

The three main ideas that motivated Judge Dee were:

1st- The idealistic influence of Confucianism and Taoism of the time on Judge Dee.

2nd- Judge Dee's belief that it was his sworn duty to each person under his jurisdiction, that he be above reproach. So that all could believe in his fairness in all matters and never feel as if he showed favoritism of any type to anybody, no matter what their position or the circumstances were.

3rd-And probably foremost, was his Self-Interest in the preservation of his position as head Magistrate, for the area. In that if he ever sentenced a person for a crime and it turned out that the person was innocent, then he would not only bring dishonor to himself and his family, but he would loss all of his possessions, his position and then have to suffer the same sentence that he had imposed on the innocent person, including death.

Use the WORLD RELIGION book as a reference for Confucianism and Taoism. Then use the story of the cases of Judge Dee to show how he used these influences and there effects and end results.
