Essay Instructions: My topic is John Smith..
Prompt: Look at the historical context of your topic. Look at how your topic affected society, but also look at how society affected your topic (it's symbolic relationship). Include sources positively and negatively critical of your topic if possible. Also, attempt a topic that brings out your passion of interest. (incorporate John smith with people; indians and the English)
Focus your research on a certain aspect of her work or time of her life; do not attempt a biographical essay of a person; its too broad; has little detail.

Critique your sources. Ask, HOW they differ in interpretations or account. WHERE was disagreement or consensus among historians? WHICH ones did you find particularly helpful?

Essay Instructions: Scenario:
You are a CPA with an office in NearLakes City and clients consisting primarily of professionals, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. John Smith, Esq., a practicing attorney with offices near yours, walks in your office and wants advice from you relating to a recent influx of cash he received as a result of winning a large jury verdict on behalf of his client in a personal injury case. His wife Jane Smith accompanies him during your meeting because she has some additional tax planning advice to ask of you.

John Smith---Lawyer
I worked on this case for over two years. The jury awarded my client $2,000,000 in damages, of which my fee was $300,000 plus recovery of expenses paid up front in the amount of $25,000. How is the $300,00 taxed? What about the $25,000? What can I do to minimize the tax consequences or each? Also, I am thinking about buying the building that I currently lease my office space in. My current lease is $3,500 per month. How is this lease reported on my income tax returns (either personally of for my business which is a separate law practice established as an LCC)? Do I get better tax benefits for paying the lease or for buying the building? What are the differences?

Jane Smith---Wife
I think that the fees would be better used for paying off our house and buying a new, bigger house that I?ve had my eye on. Does it make better sense for us to pay off the mortgage, sell the house, and buy a new house, or should we just use the money to buy new house after selling the old house? Also, I sell handcrafted jewelry which earned me $20,000 last year. Do my business activities constitute a trade or business for federal income tax purposes? Or is this just a hobby? Should I establish a separate trade or business to get tax benefits on these earnings? Does it make any difference that I use my car primarily for transporting my jewelry to different shops around town? Finally, I think I can earn more money if John were willing to invest $15,000 for new jewelry making equipment since my original equipment which cost $10,000 five years ago, is almost obsolete. Does this make sense from a tax perspective?

e. What tax benefits would John realize if he invested $15,000 in Jane?s jewelry making?
f. Can Jane depreciate her vehicle or jewelry making equipment? How?

Essay Instructions: I need (7) seven-page essay on the American Literature course.
There are five separate topics that need to be answered.
Please answer one question per page except the last question (1.6C) which should be answered in 2 to 3 pages.
I’ll include all the literature materials (instructions, short stories, etc.) from the textbook.


1.2B: Comparing Writer's Purposes
Directions: Complete the comparison essay exercise, "2. Come to America," on page 36 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. Notice that your textbook gives a fairly good outline for what to include in this short essay.

Cover the differences in purpose, audience, and motivation between John Smith and William Bradford. Use concrete examples quoted properly from the text to support your points.


1.3B: Short Narrative
Directions: Complete the creative writing exercise, "3. The Other Side of the Story," on page 47 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. The textbook mentions some research sources you might use to find out facts to use as background or to incorporate into the story. But remember also to use your imagination to put yourself (and your readers) into the time and place.

Think about what particular person you are personifying as you write your essay. For example, Mary Rowlandson was a mother and a Puritan, two facts about her that definitely came through in her writing without her explicit statement of either fact. What facts about your character will appear in your essay?



1.5B: Book of Virtues
Directions: Complete the creative writing exercise, "3. Becoming Virtuous," on page 98 of your textbook. It should include at least seven virtues. Remember that this is a creative writing exercise, so try to write your virtues in a clear, descriptive way.

If you reread Franklin's list you'll see that the illustrations he's written for each virtue give a good summary of what he's trying to accomplish. Notice also that his virtues draw something from religious ideas about virtues, but more from rationalist ideas about virtue. Your list doesn't need to be religious to be effective.


1.6B: Speech
Directions: Complete the exercise, "3. A Call to Action," on page 105 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. Your textbook says that you can recast all or part of Henry's speech. Please work with at least two paragraphs.

You can choose any issue that you feel needs action and would benefit from some persuasive speaking.
When you are finished writing your speech, practice delivering it out loud either with an audience or to the mirror. Then revise any parts that didn't work well as an oral expression.


1.6C: Autobiographical Narrative
Directions: Now it is time to complete the autobiographical narrative you've been collecting ideas for during the preceding sections. Your final draft will be read and evaluated as part of your grade for this course. It should be at least five paragraphs long.

Look at the "Writer's Workshop" section on pages 130 - 132 of your textbook for a description of the narrative and steps you should follow to organize your thoughts and produce a polished final draft. There is a short sample section from the conclusion of a student narrative on page 132.
