Title: The common Theme in Jamaica Kincaid

Total Pages: 3 Words: 1038 Works Cited: 3 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Guide:
Write an analytical essay on Jamaica Kincaids books "Annie John" and "My Brother" that focuses on Annie's and Kincaid's development in life. Identify the theme given below and show how the thesis is developed in each text. Start the essay by mentioning the major support points you will make to prove the thesis in both works.

"Nothing you have experienced in the past is unimportant; accepting and appreciating all the things that you have been trough in life, all that life has given you, all that you have experienced in life, and accepting your past, your roots, your history, is what makes you the person you are NOW. The person you are Now is made up of all you have been through and where you come from. Accept this, appreciate your past, carry it with you, to build your self."

Kincaids' life and the successful writer she has become today is because of accepting who she has been before, and appreciating, learning from all that she has been through in life and in her childhood.

Clearly, prove this with quotes and events in the both of the books, and show that in order to be satisfied with who you are now and today, you have to accept and always hold on to who you were, your past and where you come from.

Use these ideas: hold on to your past to prepare for the future - appreciate/understand your past so that you know why things happened in the past, and learn from it to build up your future. Everything you learn from your past adds up to your future, makes you who you are now, makes the building stones of yourself...

Please use as a source, both works of Kincaid..

Essay Instructions: To an interviewer?s question about the stakes of not recording the story accurately, John Edgar Wideman replied ?Well, it?s life or death. What?s at stake is the perpetuation of the world as I see it, the world that in counter-distinction to or in tension with the world as other people see it. For African American people I am in the business of inventing reality?that stands on its own feet, that gives a different perspective on history, on crime, on art, on love. I?m actively deconstructing the given formulas and definitions of African American culture and life and trying to put in their place those that seem more reasonable, more lively, more potentially positive. In my mind, I can?t think of anything more important.? Is Wideman?s assertions about the responsibility of the black writer to his/her community something that you believe Richard Wright or Jamaica Kincaid would agree with? Show how Wright in Black Boy and Wideman in Brothers and Keepers ?invent? a reality that gives an authentic dimension to African American life. This is a question about the aesthetics of realism so make sure your paper addresses this. (Please use 2 of these books for your answer, you can substitute either Wright or Wideman with Jamaica Kincaid?s My Brother if you wish.)
