Discuss the contradictory relationship between slavery and capitalism in the US during the first half of the nineteenth century. Then explain how slavery could continue and even thrive in the U.S. when it was dying out just about everywhere else in the western hemisphere. (Hint: one of the things you need to discuss here is Paternalism.) Finally, explain why white people of all classes in the capitalist north were opposed to the expansion of slavery, but at the same time were also staunchly anti- abolitionist.
