Instructions for Italian College Essay Examples

Title: Italian Americans of the 1930's

Total Pages: 9 Words: 2845 Works Cited: 6 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: The paper should not be a collection of historians' opinions or a general encyclopedia entry. Sources should be used to find data to create your own, reasoned view of the people . If you look at Polish-Americans, for example, it should be "Polish-Americans in the 1940s" (focused on a decade) or "Polish-Americans and Politics" (focused on a theme/aspect) but never just "Polish-Americans." You can decide on the specifics. The essays should include primary sources. A good paper will do more than chronicle, it will, after presenting the data, then analyze the links between events and developments in the local community/group you study and the larger developments in American society.

Title: Italian american stereotyping

Total Pages: 2 Words: 668 Sources: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Discuss the stereotyping and self-stereotyping of the Italian American in mainstream American culture. Focus on Coppola’s Godfather trilogy (and if you wish, Mario Puzo’s novel upon which it is based). Why is Coppola’s trilogy, in some respects the master narrative of the Italian American experience, so crucial to an understanding of the way Italian America has been represented in the mass media? As a corollary, discuss the mean streets films of Martin Scorsese and Stanley Tucci’s Big Night. How do these films disturb the order of stereotypes that has determined the representation of the Italian American in mainstream — Hollywood — cinema? Aside from the Mafia stereotype, discuss some of the other ways in which mainstream American culture has stereotyped Italian Americans. Here you may wish to take a historical point of view of the original process of stereotyping that stemmed from the Great Immigration and involved the encounter between natives and foreigners/strangers. In the first chapter of Italian American stereotyping, the “established”, using their power to define the situation and impose their definition on all those involved, tended to enclose the newcomers in an iron cage of stereotype, a highly simplified version of social realities. We saw this at work in the traumatic passage through Ellis Island as represented in Crialese’s Nuovomondo and the other films we screened. Indeed, the Ellis Island experience was the initial step in a process of stigmatic
stereotyping that would lead to, among other things, the Sacco and Vanzetti case. This negative stereotyping of the immigrants has evolved into a mass-mediated system of representation in which Italian Americans, despite their assimilation and despite the current exaltation of Italy itself and of all things Italian (as recounted by Barzini), are often represented as “improper subjects” that, one way
or another, introduce dissonance into the American Dream.

Your primary focus, however, should be on the current state of Italian American stereotyping. Here you might want to refer to the body-image, the speech/language image, and the culture of food, especially the clips of the Italian American family at table that we screened at the beginning of the semester. What about the role of Italian Americans as gender and sexual icons? With respect to male iconicity, how do we go from Rudolph Valentino to Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino? What sort of Italianness do John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone represent? Is one aware of the Italianness of Bruce Springsteen or Nicolas Cage when they perform? With respect to female iconicity, how do we go from Anna Magnani (in The Rose Tatoo) to Madonna? How does Madonna’s Italian-ness manifest itself?

Feel free to introduce any of the texts we have treated or with which you are familiar into your discussion. Here you might wish to discuss a film like Moonstruck or the HBO television series, The Sopranos? What is your attitude toward ethnic stereotyping? How can it be resisted and countered?
