Essay Instructions: Informative Paper: Research Sources Review
Overview of the Assignment:
This assignment requires students to write an informative paper which reviews three sources related to your approved research topic ? the sources should have the potential to be used for the Argument/ Persuasive research paper.
Topics:
Your topic for this source review will be the topic approved for your Research Paper ? a narrowed/ focused controversial issue, related to the theme, Education.
Students will --
o research the topic, searching for sources which explore the topic thoroughly, collecting information, viewpoints, facts, and opinions related to the topic, and addressing the research question
o write a paper in which you review ? summarize and analyze -- three sources:
o two sources from academic library databases (Proquest, Ebscohost, etc)
o one credible, reliable Web source
o document the paper per APA standards by listing the sources on a References page
note: This informative paper is not an argument; its purpose is to review three sources which present information and various sides of the issue without arguing a point.
Length/ Development/ Format:
? Format the paper according to APA standards, including title page and References page.
Note: Since this is a source review rather than a formal essay paper, no abstract is required.
? Your paper should be 3 (full) - 4 pgs, excluding the title page and References page. If your paper is 4 pgs, you will have a total of 6 numbered pages when you add the title page and References page.
? Double-space, using 12pt times new roman (or similar) font.
Content -- your paper should include:
Introduction
? An introduction paragraph should include
o your topic and research question
o a general overview of the ?so what?? factor for your topic
o states why the topic is worthwhile, important, and worthy of research
o introduces the paper?s content as a review of sources per the topic
Body paragraphs
? Select three sources that you have found through your research so far.
o NOTE: Look at the Argument/ Persuasive Research Paper assignment for required sources, and kinds of sources not acceptable (i.e. Wikipedia, blog sites, un-credentialed general Web sites). Use the library databases (Proquest) for scholarly articles.
? For each of the three sources:
o Introduce the source by author (or responsible party, i.e. organization), and title, and explain where/ how you found the source (i.e. in an academic database, through Google Scholar, listed in a bibliography, etc.)
o Summarize the thesis, content/ main ideas, and support within the source
o Explain why you consider the source credible/ reliable
? NOTE: see information on the Purdue OWL and also the handout under Resources to help evaluate sources, including Web sites

o Explain why you think you may use the source in your Argument/ Persuasive paper (or conversely, why you may not use it)
? Transition clearly between each section as you move from discussion/analysis of source #1 to discussion/ analysis of source #2 to discussion/ analysis of source #3
Conclusion
? A conclusion paragraph should include
o a brief, objective summary of the source review
o speculation on further research, other sources or kinds of sources you
may consider as you progress towards the Research Paper
o a sense of finality/ closure to the paper
References page
? Format an APA entry for each of the three sources reviewed in your paper
? Follow APA standards (see Writing Arguments p.291+, the sample paper p.208, Longman Handbook APA section, and online sites including the Purdue OWL).
NOTE: Sources should be listed in alphabetical order on the References page)
Read your paper holistically for unity, coherence, and flow.
Check for effective sentence structures, phrasing, and word choice.
Check for transitional words and phrases.
Proofread and edit your paper. (see Longman Handbook and relevant
course documents, including ?Top 20 Errors Students Make? and
?Style Guidelines,? and online sites, including the Purdue OWL)
Due: The end of Week Five, Sunday midnight
Submit: Post your paper as a Word .doc or .docx or Rich Text .rtf file to Blackboard
Points: 100 (see the Syllabus for course grading)
Evaluation criteria:
1. Content ? three sources reviewed per the assignment
2. Structure -- clear and logical organization and clear development, use of transitions
3. Style and Usage -- appropriate level of diction, usage and sentence structure, clear, interesting voice
4. Sentence Variety -- varied sentence length and type, effective constructions
5. Sentence Structure -- fragments, run-ons, comma splices, parallelism, subordination, incorrect word order, missing or repeated subject
6. Grammar -- verb form and endings, tense sequence & consistency; subject & verb agreement, plurals, possessives, qualifiers, articles, pronoun form & reference, comparison
7. Idiomatic Diction -- choice of word and structure, prepositions, repeated words, no slang or second language interference
8. Documentation -- correct APA format, including Reference page entries
9. Mechanics -- punctuation, capitalization, spelling, editing errors (for example, omitted word)
The topic i will be focusing on is " at risk students" from elementary until high school. I choose this topic because i think it is a big issue we are having here in the United States and it is not addressed well enough. Since this topic can be broad i would like to focus on these two points: economical status, family and community structure.
