Instructions for Individualism College Essay Examples

Title: Individualism Philosophy of Language

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1465 Sources: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Suggested sources are "Individualism and the Mental" by Tyler Burge and "Elucidations of Meaning" by James Higginbotham, pages 157-158. I can't find these materials anywhere, not even in our textbook. We were not given an actual prompt for this paper. We were just told to come up with our own paper based on one introductory lecture on individualism. So I guess it's just a basic overview. No research is required. No quotes are required either, unless they come from Burge or Higginbotham.

Essay Instructions: 1. The theme of the individual identity and individualism is a surviving element of romanticism that can be found embedded in the myth of american identity. From the two works list below, discuss this theme within the context of the work. So you might discuss the following: How does this theme play out in terms of gender and social status? Is a character's identity a result of struggle (successful or unsuccessful)? If so define and discuss the conflict and the outcome. Stories for this question are: Mark Twain(Leaping frog of Calavers County), Kate Chopin(The Awakening).

2. Realism and Naturalism are two influential modes of writing that Americans writers adopted from their European cousins. American authors who wrote in this way are known for both their regionalism and local color. Define these two movements and the resultant regionalism and local color in terms of their main characteristics of practice. Then apply these definitions in a discussion of three works in which you argue the notion each work is representative of the Realism and Naturalism mode and how each can be further delineated as "American." You may include discussion of how a work both does and does not fit into categories. Stories for this question are: Brent Hart (Luck Of Roaring Camp), Charlotte Perkins Gilman (The Yellow Wallpaper), Stephen Crane (Maggie).
