These are the exact instructions given by my instructor: Write a 4-6 (will accept 4 1/2 to 5) page paper which is related to your reading(my reading was: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl) to the instructor. This paper must be in MLA format, and needs to include outside sources. These sources may be from the Internet, or a more traditional media (Modern Literary Criticism, Criticism of American Literature, books, articles, etc.) The paper must be original, that is, it has not been submitted for grade for this or any other class.

Your paper will be doubled-spaced, with one-inch margins all around. You do not need a title page. The 4-6 page lenth does not include your Works cited page.

Failure to use MLA documentation format will result in the loss of 15 points off your final paper grade.

Clearly state your thesis(what you wish to prove) near the beginning of the paper. Adequately support your thesis with references to the text, outside sources and your own ideas. Be sure to cite critics and organize their thoughts into your own ideas. Name your critic. example "As Eliot comments..." or say " one critic says..." Make your source clear. You need to cite sources of ideas as well as quotations which are not your own. Be sure to follow standard conventions of grammar and mechnanics.

Essay Instructions: Harriet Jacobs ends her narrative "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl", "with freedom, not in the usual way with marriage." Comment of the implication here that freedom matters more to Linda Brent than marriage. To what extent does "Incidents" suggest that the "life story" is different for enslaved women that for free (white) women?

7. Was this book an interesting read?
• If not, where could the author improve?
• Any significant flaws with the book?
• What did you really like about the book?
8. Place the book in historical context. Does the book reflect ideas that we have learned in class?
• How does it fit into the course? (Work in major events surrounding subject matter within the book)
• Did you come across information that was new and should be worked into the lecture material?

Tips to Consider:
1. If you find that you have met all the requirements but still have space to fill, then you should elaborate on the book. This includes discussing details or highlighting specific moments that caught your attention. However, aim first to meet the guidelines.
2. Do not use outside (internet) resources: Outside resources are not necessary; this is not a research paper. my grade will be penalized for including information that did not come from the book.
