Title: In Cold Blood

Total Pages: 2 Words: 580 Bibliography: 2 Citation Style: None Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: You will work on a term paper project based on the book, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. This classic of literature provides a case study, based on actual events, of the lives of two criminals eventually executed in the state of Kansas. As you read the book, you need to compile an INDEX OF CLUES for your book that compiles as many clues and explanations that you can identify in your book. As you read, look for clues from the lives of the characters that may explain why they commit the crimes. These clues can be biological, psychological, or sociological in nature based on events, relationships, injuries, family, economics, etc.. Use a two-column format so you can type a brief description of each clue on the left and the page number(s) to the right. After completing your index of clues, you will use it to choose the single theory that best explains both main criminal characters in the book. You will write an essay 2-5 pages in length explaining what theory appears ex post facto (after the fact) to be the best explanation of the facts presented. You must choose a single theory as the best explanation and use evidence from the book to show how the concepts of the theory align with the lives and behavior of the two characters. Acknowledge other theories that appear to be implicated but articulate why the theory you chose is better. Include page numbers in your essay as internal citations. You may need to read ahead in the text or review another criminology book to find a brief explanation of the theory(ies). Your paper should be double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. font (courier font preferred but not required). Use no direct quotes or close paraphrases except as evidence for your propositions.
