In this module you have learned of the importance of the immune system in the protection against disease. For the module 3 case assignment select one immune disorder which interests you or select an immune disorder from the list below. Once you have selected a disorder you should discuss:


1. The normal function of the immune system. Be sure to explain the function of B-lymphocytes, killer T-lymphocytes, helper T-lymphocytes, and macrophages.

2. The function of the complement system.

3. The immune disorder and how the immune disorder you have selected represents an alteration in the normal function of the immune system.


List of immune disorders:

Agammaglobulinemia, Severe Combined Immune Deficiency, Type I Diabetes Melletus

When a person is said to be immunocompromised their immune system is incapable of working at full capacity, and there are a number of elements that need to be considered when caring for them.
Observing practices that prevent the transmission of pathogens include diligent assessment of the patient, education and adhering to the practice guidelines. A nurse is in an ideal position to help prevent the complications that can stem from immune compromise. Please answer the following questions and support your answers with current and relevant literature.


Identify 3 conditions that can lead to a component of immunocompromisation in a person. Discuss the pathophysiology that leads to decreased immunity of each conditions briefly.


Discuss strategies nurses can implement in practice to assist prevention of transmission of pathogens. Within this, identify the important measures involved in planning care, and also consider assessment and management of immunocompromised patients. Discuss the measures that will result in a marked decrease of complications for these patients.
