Essay Instructions: Synthesis means putting ideas from multiple sources together. Instead of finding similarities and differences, sythesizing sources is a matter of pulling them together into some kind of harmony. Synthesis searches for links between concepts for the purpose of constructing a thesis or theory. In a previous paper we summarized C. Wright Mills' article on the Sociological Imagination. The purpse of the essay is to draw on your understanding of what Mills meant by 'sociological imagination,' to incorporate an additional sociologial perspective into it, and to connect the two together to your personal life.

1.)Remember that Mills teaches us to connect the individual to the larger society; know the difference between personal troubles and public issues; and to recoginze that our biographes are set in a larger historical scene.

It allows us to understand how seemingly “personal troubles” may be related to the larger social context of “public issues.” Identify an issue that you think would be personal trouble for an individual (eg. unemployment, divorce, homelessness, etc.) and then identify the societal influences that impinge on the individual’s experience.
