Essay Instructions: The BODY of the paper is to be 5-7 pages.

Topics for paper include the following crime categories: environmental crimes, consumer fraud, drug crimes or human trafficking. Choose one topic to research.

The paper will include BOTH:

A. a background profile on your chosen crime category from the list above (statistics about the crime, who commits this crime? who are the victims of this crime? where does this crime occur most often?)

AND

B. your analysis of your chosen crime category using one of the theories discussed in chapters 3, 6 or 7. Select the theory that you believe best explains the criminal behavior in the crime category you've selected and support your conclusion. The analysis section should comprise at least 2 pages of the paper.



Rules:

A. For your sources, please use journal articles from appropriate scholarly journals (Justice Quarterly, Crime and Delinquency, Criminology, etc.) and credible research sites (National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, etc.). Do not use Wikipedia, Answer.com, etc. or your textbook as sources in scholarly research!

B. Please use scholarly sources to support your choice of theory when completing Part B of the assignment.

Essay Instructions: Topic: Human Trafficking and National Security Implication

Research Paper 25%

You will prepare a 7-10 page research paper (not including your required bibliography) on a national security topic of your choice. The paper will outline the US approach to the issue and explain why a certain policy approach was taken by the U.S. You should cite at least 5 scholarly sources.

Your analysis of how a policy emerged should reference various relevant themes discussed in class about U.S. national security policy making processes and politics.Please include the following topics: E.g. America?s cultural and political predispositions (Mead), organizational cultures (Builder), bureaucratic politics and decision making, (Allison, Pfiffner) Civil-military relations (Cohen, Huntington), the dynamics between Congress, the public, and the executive branch; the interaction or influence of international organizations and actors.

**Choose one country or area of your choice to analyze and describe either:

1) contemporary forms of human trafficking (sex trafficking, child trafficking);
2) forced labor;
3) or human smuggling.

Define and characterize it according to the following:
*Where this type of trafficking occurs?
*Who are the victims?
*How are they victimized?
*Who are the perpetrators?

-Further support your analysis by providing evidence and information regarding to any NGO (Non-Government Organization) activity in relation to combat human trafficking, forced labor or human smuggling. Is the local government of the particular country or area playing an active role in combating these issues?

*Support your project with online sources (websites, short movies, journals) and give your suggestions that you think might improve the situation in that country or area. Choose credible research sources that will give you a greater perspective on the issue.

**Find at least four research sources that will help you understand the issue.
*How large is this problem worldwide?
*What laws, treaties or international agreements exist to combat this issue?
*Why aren?t they successful?

** Refer to all reading we have completed during the semester. What are the most important points in all three books? What have you learned during this semester?
