Title: Holocaust Memorial in Washington DC

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1808 References: 5 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Although this paper is labeled a research paper, it is also a reaction paper, your reaction to being exposed to a very moving presentation of a topic that evokes very strong feelings from everyone who visits it.

Half of the paper should be devoted to thinking about the implications of how events happening in Europe from the 17th century (1648 thru World War II) affected what took place during the Holocaust. The other half should be about how you felt when visiting the Holocaust Museum.

We have been using the book "The Making of the West - Peoples and Cultures: A Concise History" by Lyyn Hunt, Thomas R. martin, Barbara H. Rosenwein, R. Po-chia Hsia and Bonnie G. Smith. I need at least five citations.

Here are some guidelines: . There are many ways you can organize your thoughts. I have listed four possible approaches below, but there are other approaches and I will be happy to help you decide what approach you want to take.
a. Compare what you learned from the textbook versus what you saw in the displays. How did the displays affect you, and how might they have affected other visitors compared with reading a book or watching a movie on the topic. In answering that question, consider whether you think that people who visited the displays would normally read books or see films about the topic.
b. Compare the events described in the displays with the viewpoint reflected in them. (In other words, the Holocaust Memorial reflects events of the 1930s and 1940s, but was built in the 1980s and 1990s. How does it reflect the latter period as well as the earlier events?)
c. The Memorial is different from other history museums in that it focuses on genocides or similar events that have taken place since the end of World War II. Explain how these genocides compare with the Holocaust, and defend your opinion that the Holocaust was unique or just another in a long series of similar events that have taken place in Western Civilization.
d. How does the purpose and impact of the two approaches, actual displays of historical material such as images, documents and historical artifacts in the displays, compare with information from books and similar sources? What are the similarities and the differences “seeing” versus “reading,” information, and what was the effect on you of these two approaches?

Title: Genocide

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1622 Sources: 3 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: I guess this would be considered a book report. Concentrate on genocide and Neighbors by Jan Gross.

This paper asks you to contemplate one of the most tragic events in human history: Genocide. Our principle text for this topic is the book Neighbors by Jan Gross. Whereas Wealth of Nations and Communist Manifesto are primary sources (original sources from the time period), Neighbors is considered a "secondary source," or a source written by an historian, composed some years after the event it analyzes.

In Neighbors, Jan Gross grapples with the mass slaughter of the Jewish population in a small village during WWII. When it was initially published, the book generated condemnation and controversy, for the perpetrators of murder were not Nazis, but average Polish citizens, people who had lived along side their Jewish neighbors for centuries.

The topics for this paper are relatively open, although you can bounce off ideas below to develop your thesis, or can combine all topics into one paper. The main requirement is that you use Neighbors as the center of your interpretation, and integrate at least two additional sources.

The paper should be five pages, 12 point font, and fully cited....WITH FOOTNOTES (unlimited)

Potential Topics:
1) Consider the book Neighbors as a "case study" of genocide. What does the book tell us about the nature of genocide? What motivates one group of people to kill another?
2) Consider the relationship between war and human morality. Does war change our moral compass? Why? How?
3) Why was this book so controversial? How does it change our views of genocide?
4) Can Genocide be prevented?
5) If you have knowledge about another case of genocide, you may compare and contrast the case of Neighbors; just be sure to keep the book central to your analysis and to shore up your analysis with outside research (i.e. do not rely on a fuzzy memory).

ALL THESE TOPICS DO NOT HAVE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PAPER, THEY ARE JUST SUGGESTIONS

Each paper should address clearly who was responsible for the killings in Neighbors, and what motivated the killers to slaughter innocent victims.

Explore your own ideas---just make sure that you support these ideas with research. Look for sources in:

1) The USA Library!
2) UN Definition of Genocide, "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide," http://www.un-documents.net/cppcg.htm
3) The Holocaust Museum: http://www.ushmm.org
AGAIN, THESE SOURCES ARE NOT REQUIRED, JUST SUGGESTED.

Note: last time I ordered an example paper from you, it was five days late past its due date. Please try to complete it before the date selected, if at all possible. the last one was very helpful when writing my own paper.
