Essay Instructions: Topic: Populist-Charismatic dictators: the cases of Stalin, Mao and Ho Chi-minh

Question: What is the relationship between a charismatic dictator and the people? To what extent is this a symbiotic link, or is it based on systematic planning on the part of the leader?

The paper should argue whether there is a mutual relationship between these populist-charismatic dictators or whether the relationship is based on systematic planning on the part of the leader. Specifically looking at Stalin, Mao and Ho Chi Minh.

You will notice that all three leaders had a strong personality cult surrounding them. It is interesting to note that under these leaders a lot of deaths and famine occurred, but much of that is ignored in favour of their heroic memory. Even in death these leaders are still praised for leading their country through the communist revolution. Stalin is the only leader out of these three that was publicly torn down by the later government (de-stalinization) All leaders also claim to be very modest in terms of their personality cult. They note that without the people the are nothing (common communist belief), is this all an act? I would argue that there is a definite symbiotic link between these leaders and the people. However, there is also an element of systematic planning involved, without this the leaders would be unable to appear so charismatic.
