Essay Instructions: What is the history of China's importance to the U.S., from Nixon's visit to China in 1972 to the present, which contributed to the implementation of Obama's 'U.S. Pivot to Asia Strategy'?

I need some help, highlighting why is there such a complicated relationship between china and the US. My idea is heavily influence by Thomas Barnett (and Fareed Zakaria's idea that our relationship with China is a see-saw of Competition and cooperation. This include that China's is projected to be the next economic hegemony in the upcoming years/decade.
