Essay Instructions: Three of the sources must be academic, including at least one book source. Now let me elaborate on the topic, since "Harlem Renaissance" is rather broad. The topic I have chosen is something like this: was African American literature truly a struggle for racial recognition or equality, or were the authors just expressing themselves for the sake of creating literature? You may change the topic if necessary (I feel like the topic I have chosen isn't that great), but I would like for it to stay within the confines of racism & African American literature. I will send a couple of PDF files which I think will help.

Essay Instructions: The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.
For the topic you choose:
Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an ?interview,? a ?proposal,? a ?letter,? a ?short story,? a ?blog,? an ?essay,? an ?article,? or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information.
3. Use at least two (2) sources besides the textbook, which counts as one (1) source.
Topic choices (pick 1):
? Office Art Memo. Memorandum. Your boss, who knows you?ve been taking a humanities class since he pays for your tuition reimbursement, has tasked you with managing the art budget for your company, expecting you to choose various pieces of art for the new corporate offices. (Note: Replicas of the works are acceptable since they are more cost-efficient and you are working on a budget.) Include the following:
1. Identify three examples of 19th century Impressionist painting or sculpture and three Post-Impressionist works. Explain how the six pieces of art fall into these two styles.
2. In a memo, describe the appearance of your six choices to your CEO so he or she will know what the art looks like and where it would be placed in the corporate offices.
3. Explain why each piece is considered to be historically significant.
4. Explain how each piece ?fits? your company?s overall (or desired) corporate image. Keep in mind that a piece of art is supposed to ?say? something about the owner, so describe what would these pieces of art say about your company.
? New Composition. Speech. Your uncle?s birthday is in two months, and everyone knows that he loves almost all kinds of music. As a birthday gift for him, you want to have a special piece of music composed in his honor which will be played at a family birthday celebration. Write a speech that you will make to the composer?s agent. Include the following:
1. Narrow your choices down to three composers you?ve studied in this course. Choose one of the composers and explain why you want him to write the ? birthday present? music.
2. Explain why the other two composers were ultimately not selected.
3. Specifically identify the musical elements in the composer?s style that you would like to be included in the new music written for your uncle.
4. Describe what sort of emotion is generated by listening to the works of your selected composer; in other words, what do you want your uncle to ?feel? as he hears the music, and why is this composer so perfect for this composition?
? Harlem Renaissance Poets. Essay & Poem. Choose two poems by different authors from the Harlem Renaissance. Write an essay that:
1. Describes each author? ? s role and importance within the Harlem Renaissance.
2. Identify the elements in each of their poems in which you see evidence of the ? double-consciousness? being expressed by each author.
3. Describe the primary themes you see in the poetry written during this time period, referring to specific lines in each of the poems.
4. Write your own poem that expresses these identified themes of the Harlem Renaissance.
? Women?s Roles Then & Now. Script. Script a conversation between two notable women from the 18th and/or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include:
1. Biographical information for each woman,
2. The historical status for women in general during the time period in which each woman lived.
3. What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes.
4. What each of the women might think about women?s current roles.

Essay Instructions: The Modernist movement and the Harlem Renaissance both emerged in the early 20th century. Both of these movements fundamentally changed American literature, but they were very different in their goals, methods, and styles and in the communities they served. In some cases they were influenced by the same social trends; in other cases they were writing in response to very different trends and experiences.

? Consider the connections of these literary movements to music and visual arts. Which paintings or pieces of music of that period would illustrate these interactions?

Essay Instructions: Students, the second paper has the same guidelines as the first, just write on a different topic. The guidelines are written again, below.

A Short Paper Assignment allows you, early in the course, to demonstrate your research skills to your instructor and to receive feedback that will benefit you when you write your research paper. With this assignment, you will learn how to do proper and adequate research and write a short paper and prepare you for writing the research paper.

This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of two academically credible sources. Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago Manual of Style format or APA or MLA.

The short paper needs to be turned in through the assignment section for grading. If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes or footnotes. If you read the information and write it in your own words and it is not common knowledge, then you must cite the source because you are paraphrasing someone's information.

The short paper must include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor's name, and date. You must also include a bibliography at the end of your paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Before submitting your paper, check your grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper. Please label your paper as follows: lastnamefirstnameHIST101ShortPaper.

HIST 222 Research Paper Suggestions
These are suggestions. Feel free to come up with your own.

Remember that: the more specific your topic, the better the paper. In other words, a paper focused on World War II in general will be a less scholarly paper than a paper focused on Army battles in Europe in WWII, for example. My topics below are a little vague on purpose, you will need to refine them. You will need at least 3 sources, one of which must be a primary source. The primary source could be the first-hand account of an eyewitness to an event, a biography written by a historical figure, or a novel that is considered essential to understanding an event, for example. Secondary sources are textbooks and books or articles written by scholars studying an event.

If you don’t know what to write on, start out by reading your textbook to get a basic understanding of the different paper topics. The aim of the paper is NOT to repeat the basic elements of the topic that you find in textbooks. The aim is to read about your subject and become somewhat of an expert on it (hence the need to narrow it down) and both lay out the basic ideas and elements of it AND analyze it.

So, for example: if you wrote a paper on the Iraq War, (which obviously would not really apply to this class), you would start by laying out some of the most pertinent elements of the facts of the war. But, the “meat” of the paper would be your analysis. What thinkers or politicians believe that we should stay in the war, what thinkers or politicians want to withdraw our troops? What is the background for these beliefs? You would state your case (backed up by the entire paper’s facts and analysis) ??" or your argument. This is a much different paper than simply stating statistics and a list of “who’s who”. Finally, once you decide on a topic listed here, but don’t know what some of the deeper questions regarding it are, just ask me.
Again, these are just ideas and all of these would have to be narrowed down. The topic has to be different than the topic of the first paper.

3) Why nonviolence did not work in Northern urban communities during the Civil Rights Movement.
4) The reputation of the Black Panther Party and an explanation of the real history behind the BPP.
5) How did world events impact the modern civil rights movement and organizations like SNCC and the slogan Black Power?
6) The struggle for voting rights in a certain locality
7) Jim Crow - ONE aspect of it
8) What was the Nation of Islam and how is it significant to the Black community?
9) What was the UNIA and how did it help or harm the black community?
10) What was SNCC? - develop a thesis statment about it.

• Students need to cite at least once every paragraph, to acknowledge an author’s ideas. This is done even if there are no quotes, see Chicago guides for more information. If more than one author’s ideas are used in a paragraph, then more than one citation needs to be used.

• Any quote needs a citation at the end of it.

• Use both footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography.

• Papers need an intro (with a thesis statement) and a conclusion.

• Papers need a title page.
