For your reflection…..

This time of year is most magnificent. The Christian world celebrates Advent anticipating the coming of Christ, no longer as a baby in a manger, but at the God of justice and love who makes all things right. In the same way, the Jews begin celebrating Hanukkah this coming Tuesday evening. While it celebrates victory and triumph, it also celebrates the relationship between God and His people.

Think about the virtue of HOPE. The history and theology of the Jewish people rides on the fact that God keeps his promises. It appears in Genesis at the foundation of the world and in the stories of our ancestors in faith; in exists in the formation of the covenant in Deuteronomy and in the blessings of Leviticus; the prophets pound it in their message and it is prayed and sung about in the psalms.

Your essay, then, is a reflection on hope. What do the prophets mean when they use the term, “DAY OF THE LORD?” This is strong theme found in Isaiah 40-55; Jeremiah 30-33; and Ezekiel 33-48. Look up the meaning of “Day of the Lord.” Perhaps use one of the prophets listed above and develop a one-page essay reflecting on the Biblical notion of Day of the Lord and its relationship to hope.
