Essay Instructions: Compare and contrast ancient Greek drama,(ex. Sophocles'' Oedipus and Antigone) to the Renaissance Period (ex. Shakespeare''s Hamlet) to Modern drama from the early 1900''s (ex. The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams and Krapp''s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett). Compare/Contrast style of tragedy with each era. Reflect on importance of drama in ancient society as well as society now. Must have clear thesis supported by reasoning, examples, facts. Audience appreciates modern drama but needs knowledge of ancient roots. Draw on 2 primary sources, 1 ancient 1 modern & 2 secondary. Include works cited list. May write in informal tone.

Essay Instructions: After reading the play and the lecture notes provided, here are several questions to prompt your reflections on this drama:


1.What is your impression of Oedipus' character as a leader of his community? What traits does Oedipus display that compare or contrast to leaders in your community (local or national)?
2.The Oedipus tragedy seems to hinge on a "prophecy" that dooms Oedipus to a fate he hasn't, at least obviously, personally deserved. For an individual today who doesn't necessarily believe in "fate" or "prophecies," can the play still be viewed as relevant, in your opinion?
3.What strikes you as "tragic" about Oedipus, or about the events in this play? What lessons can this art form and its "tragic hero" offer?
4.What is one passage from the choral odes that punctuate the scenes (see my notes on "Stepping Through OEDIPUS") that strikes you as especially poetic or lyrical and why? (OR) Describe your understanding of the chorus' role in the play. What tone does the chorus strike that seems to contrast or complement the action in the play?
5.In what ways is the resolution of this play satisfying or dissatisfying? Why does the Chorus conclude that we must "Count no man happy until he dies?" In your view, is Sophocles' portrayal of human nature pessimistic or optimistic, neither, or both? Explain your answer.
6.What relevance can Greek drama in general--or this tragedy in particular--have to modern life? Do you see present-day situations that mirror those presented in this play? What universal qualities did you note in this drama?
