Essay Instructions: Goal-Setting and Education/Career Planning Assignment (30%)
Due Date: Wednesday, April 10
The Goal-Setting and Education/Career Planning Assignment is intended to help you decide on two possible careers, to research the educational requirements, skill requirements, and job environments for each of these careers, and to analyze your suitability for each career. You will also use the S.M.A.R.T.S. goal-setting strategy to set an academic goal that will help you reach your future career goal.
Step 1: Career Research (10 marks)
Using the websites listed on the “Conducting Career Research” handout and any other useful sources of information that you discover, explore two careers that interest you. For each potential occupation, fill in the Career Research Chart with information about:
(a) the nature of the work, including
- typical work tasks
- physical demands
- typical workplaces
(b) salary range
(c) possibility for advancement and/or for moving into related fields
(d) employment outlook
(e) characteristics, values, etc. necessary to be successful in the occupation
(f) any other criteria that interest you
Step 2: Education Research (10 marks)
For each potential occupation, explore the educational requirements and compile information on programs from two educational institutions (so, you will be providing information for four schools in total). For each potential program, fill in the Education Research Chart with information about:
a) admission requirements
b) cost of the program
c) duration of the program
d) start dates
e) graduate placements
f) any other important information
Step 3: Analysis ??" minimum 2 pages, double spaced (20 marks)
In complete paragraphs, analyze why each of the career options that you researched would or would not be suitable for you. Consider the following & Answer these questions:
• What interests/excites you about each occupation?
• Is there anything that concerns you about each occupation? Are there any challenges you can foresee for yourself?
• How does each career match up with your personality type? Values? Current skills?
• What minimum level of education is required for each of the occupations? What will you need to do next in terms of education? Are you prepared to take these steps?
• Is there anything that interests you about each program?
• Do you meet the admission requirements for each of the programs you are interested in? What will you need to do to meet these requirements?
• Looking at the program requirements, is there a course in the first year that really interests you? Why? Is there a course that concerns you? Explain.
• Do you have any concerns about tuition costs?
In your analysis, use specific details from the self-assessment tools we've used in class, including Learning Styles, TypeFocus Careers, and the personality tests from the textbook. Consider your values - general and specific to work. Also consider particular activities you excel at and enjoy, the work/social environments in which you feel comfortable, etc.
Be thorough. Your goal in this section is to show very clearly why the careers you have researched would or would not suit you. You must give sufficient evidence showing not only why you think that you would or would not enjoy the careers, but also why you would be or would not be likely to be successful in those particular careers.
All information should be presented in complete paragraphs. Information obtained from outside sources must be properly cited.
Step 4: S.M.A.R.T.S Goal (10 Marks)
Based on your research, create a S.M.A.R.T.S plan for an academic goal that you would like to achieve to bring you closer to your career goals. Be sure that your goal meets the criteria for setting achievable goals, and that you clearly explain how your goal fulfills each element of the S.M.A.R.T.S. approach. Your answer for this section should also be 300-500 words.
