Essay Instructions: Genre exploration: select any genre other than a musical or film noir. Choose any three movies that are part of this same genre; one from near the beginning of the genre, one from the central time of the genre, and the one of the most recent examples of the genre. Then address the following points: define the genre; give a brief history; and cite an example of a film considered to be a "classic" of the genre and an example of a recent film within the genre. these two examples should be movies other than the three you choose to discuss. If you chosen movies with subgenres discuss those subgenres. Finally exsplain why you believe your chosen picture is a good or bad example of that genre.

Essay Instructions: 1.Share your observations after viewing Mary Tyler Moore "Love is All Around" (Episode 1, Season 1), Seinfeld "The Cigar Store Indian", All in the Family "Meet the Bunkers", The Simpsons "Scenes from the Class Struggle", The Honeymooners, "A Woman's Work is Never Done", and/or I Love Lucy "Job Switching". Feel free to watch all (or at least 3 various episodes) of these shows and discuss what these episodes say about American cultural norms. How are they the same today? How are they different? Use your observation skills to compare and contrast. Think and discuss how cultural groups are represented in the television industry. How has it changed its reflection?

2.Read your choice of critical essays included in the Vande Berg text (end of Chapter 14) AND find a critical online essay from the ESC Library on gender, race, class, sexuality, disabilities, or age in television -using a specific show or genre.
In your discussion, be sure to share which essay (from the text) and a link to your article for others to follow along.

You should be examining the various ways American culture is represented and reflected on television. You may also wish to bring current shows into your analyses, but do not neglect the older shows. In module 2, you may have viewed some Friends episodes for the humor and genre discussion area. A discussion about "The One with Five Steaks and an Eggplant" and the pilot episode are also relevant to discuss in this forum -with the emphasis on gender, race, class, sexuality, disabilities, or age.
