The Shape of an Essay

Though the content of essays varies widely, all essays share a basic structure. This structure allows you (the writer) to communicate your ideas most effectively to a general audience of readers. Overall, keep in mind that an essay is organized around three components: Point, Illustration / Information, and Explanation (P.I.E.).

All three of these elements are found in the essay as a whole as well as in each of its body paragraphs. As a general rule, a well-developed paragraph should be at least 5-7 sentences long, but no longer than ½ of a page for short papers.
Introduction:

Opening Ideas: hook your audience, overview of your topic

Thesis (Main Point of Essay)

Body Paragraphs:

Topic Sentence (Main Point of Paragraph)
Each body paragraph will have a different topic sentence which relates back to the thesis.

Illustration / Information (Examples, quotes, facts, etc.)

Explanation (Discussion)

Conclusion:

Restate Main Point(s)

Closing Thoughts
