Title: Gender Roles

Total Pages: 5 Words: 2160 References: 2 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Augustine discusses idealized gender roles in Christianity, especially in his portrayal of his mother, Monica. Beowulf is a product of Christian Europe. Yet, do these works conform to Augustine’s Christian notions of gender relations, role of woman, and of love and marriage? How much, if any, are Augustine’s Christian ethics prevalent in this text regarding gender roles? Using Confessions and Beowulf, write a thesis-based essay that compares or contrasts the texts’ representation of the role of gender relations.
Your paper should provide evidence and argument for a clear thesis. One test of an argument is its ability to withstand a plausible counter-argument. Your essay must take account of the most plausible counter-argument to your thesis and must respond adequately to it.
(Use only books 1-8 of Confessions and all of Beowulf).
