Essay Instructions: I would like discuss the topic of how the different
formats of media (movies, music, television, and the news) have an impact on the glorification of gang lafe in todays society.Explore not only how the media "glorify" the gangs, but maybe consider how they also may "stererotype" and even "demonize" gang members. That is, they produce standard images that don''t dig very far below the surface or don''t give a sense ofthe different types of gangs and different types of members. Also, they seldom give in depth explanations for gangs or gang activity. Finally, consider how the gangs also use the media to their benefit. I would like to tie in a little about what Martin Sanchez Jankowski wrote in his book "Islands in the Street". I would also like to look at the work of Herbert Gans and also Harvey Molotch about the sociology of news and how and what gets picked up as "news".

Essay Instructions: 1. To help us think like a crime analyst, let’s see how other sources of data, local, state, federal and international, about crime or related subjects can be used to inform our analytical work. Analysis is not just looking at data; it also involves creating advice papers (work product) that can help others do their job better, safer and more efficiently. This assignment is designed to help you gain some of these skills.
2. We will also share what we find on our two Assignment Two Moodle discussion boards and offer criticisms of others work to help them get better grades on our discussion board. See those boards for directions of what is needed.
• I have added one article to this section of Moodle for you to review (one page) as well as an example (pipe bombs) of a law enforcement bulletin that could be offered to street officers to help educate them about the dangers they could face on patrol duty. These are the background materials necessary for you to do this assignment ??" read them carefully.
• Your assignment is to create a similar bulletin to alert patrol officers to the potential use of military weapons by gang members in their jurisdiction and that they may face on the streets. Let pretend we are writing for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, an agency with a large jurisdiction with possible gang areas therein.
• You will need to do some internet research to find relevant facts and information about this subject to complete your bulletin ??" subject? (Military weapons and gangs ??" see article for hints that are highlighted in various ways). Your best bet is to look at the example and find similar information to support your writing on this different subject.
• Note that I have numbered the pipe bomb example and these numbered sections should also be the same sections found in your bulletin (albeit with a different focus than pipe bombs).
3. Your grade will rest on reading, research and making a two page professional looking bulletin on military weapons/gangs. As noted in the grading rubric you grade also rests on your interactions to help others. Post early and make sure to send your final paper to Emily for a grade and assessment of your discussion work.

Describe and analyze different approaches to gangs.

Analyze the conditions under which a specific policy or program might be most effective, and the resources required.

Compare a local policy, program or approach to those discussed in the text or discovered in research, and assess its potential success or lack thereof, given local conditions

Many innocent people have been killed by gang members because the innocent person was wearing the wrong color clothes. You did a good job in this assignment.

You should not being or end a paragraph with a reference. Your first sentence should be your introduction sentence, what is your paragraph going to discuss. Your last sentence should be your conclusion or transition sentence to the next paragraph, all in your own words. You should put the in-text citation after the information you use to signify that the material is from a resource. This was addressed in my written directions and checklist. The last page is title References. The header is the title in the upper left hand corner and the page number in the upper right hand corner.
