Essay Instructions: The Essay Topics

1. The "functionalist perspective on religion", or good aspects of religion.

2. The "conflict perspective on religion", or negative aspects of religion.

Essay Guideline

1. Please write up the concepts, following the steps suggested bellow
(Please write up each concepts based on textbook).
a. Write 2 concepts (or 2 sets of concepts) from the ?gessay topics?h to discuss in your essay (whole length is 1 page and only 5or6 sentences for each topic), the essay topics which will be given in class;
b. Make one paragraph for each concept,
1) Define the concept (referring to the textbook (Curry, Tim; Jiobu, Robert; and Schwirian, Kent (2002), Sociology for the Twenty-first Century, Third Edition. New Jersy: Prentice Hall) or any other books on sociology);
2) Clarify the meaning of the definition (not ?grepetition?h of the definition):
3) Give at least one tangible example of your own; and
4) Restate the definition (again not the same as ?grepetition?h).

2. You can and should use published materials, such as textbook (Curry, Tim; Jiobu, Robert; and Schwirian, Kent (2002), Sociology for the Twenty-first Century, Third Edition. New Jersy: Prentice Hall) But do not put the whole thing into your essay as is. Do mostly two things if you use published materials.
a. Summarize the ideas without loosing their meanings;
b. Cite the sources of information property like this: (Lewis 1965, p. 186) with footnote.

An Example Paragraph (Please write like this)

Secularization can be seen as ?gthe declining influence of religion combined with an increasing influence of Science?h (see Curry et al.2002, p.353). This tells us that to the
extent our contemporary society relies on science, religious ideas tend to be undermined, and that the extent to which it is so is straightforwardly increasing. When we have health problems, for example, most of us today rely on a medical doctor rather than, say, a shaman. Or when we plan to take SAT, CPE, and the like, most of us will consult materials published and or endorsed by academic institution rather than fortunetellers. ?gSecularization?h is, thus, a competition between science and religion going on in our modern society in which science is winning.

Tips (read the following carefully):
* Do NOT give "your opinions" (or common sense
beliefs) but report the "ideas according to
sociologists" (theories).
* Read the questions carefully and address them; the
questions are big hints.
* Follow PRECISELY the format given in the "Essay
Guideline."
* The way you cite is given in the "Essay Guideline"
which you should follow exactly.
* As a basic rule, the shorter--or the more
succinct--the better, as long as it suffices the
format and as long as it addresses the questions.
* Your paper should look like the sample paragraph
given in the "Essay Guideline."
