Essay Instructions: Definition Paper Essay
Assignment: 750-800 word definition paper
Topic: Free speech
Details:
For the first writing assignment, you will be writing a brief definition paper of at least 750 words but no more than 800. Like the other writing that we will do in this class, a definition paper is not meant as egocentric, self-expression, but as a work which communicates to an audience. When you go on to longer writing assignments, you might use short definitions to provide support for your points or to clarify terms important to your work. In academic writing, we write with an eye towards the audience always; we write to make a point, to teach a lesson, or to persuade our audience. You will choose from the list of topics below and define your term. As you begin to work on the paper, consider: What reason would you have for needing to define this term for a particular audience?
Your definition will be most effective if it is focused on a single, simple term. For example, in 750-800 words, you could discuss a term like "spreadsheet." It would be much less effective to discuss something like "accounting" in general. That is because one element of effective narrative is details. By choosing a focused topic, you can include detailed examples.
Grading:
The assignment will be graded on a 100 point scale. The 100 points are distributed as follows:
Thesis and Organization—35 points
• Is the definition clearly stated? Is the reason for the definition clear?
• Is any necessary background provided?
• Is the introduction interesting?
• Does the organization present a discernible pattern?
