Essay Instructions: FOREIGN POLICY IN IRAQ
To assist you in preparing and writing papers at the college level, there are some suggestions and some rules that should always be followed.
SUGGESTIONS:
When you begin to actually write your paper, do not try to accomplish the task in a single sitting. Write the paper and edit it. Leave it alone for a day or two before proofreading it again. Proof-read ft and edit it again. Next, have someone else look it over twice, the first time for grammar, punctuation, and syntax mistakes only, the second time for content {logic). Too often a student will become too attached to his or her efforts to be able to perform an adequate and thorough analysis of the work completed.
In a paper that is quite lengthy, an occasional typographical error might be excused. In a college paper that is to be only three pages in length, this is not the case. If you have proof-read it twice and someone else has ateo assisted you, then the likelihood of this occurring will be quite remote.
One final suggestion will determine the impact of this particular letter on your elected representative. If you have gone to the effort to research and write to him or her expounding your thoughts on a subject, then your letter should dose by asking that person to perform the task necessary to carry your idea to its conclusive point Do not end your letter merely by thanking the person for taking the time to read your tetter, in other words,- encourage him or her to act on your wishes. If your subject concerns a matter pending before the floor of the House, urge him or her to vote according to your way of thinking. If it is not even on the docket, advise him or her. to bring it up and gainer support for it
RULES:
1. Do not use the terms. I believe that, I feet that, etc.: I think doing so will affect your presentation adversely.
2. Do not use contractions; don't do it.
3. Do not split infinitives; to more thoroughly enjoy your grade.
4. Do not fail to use an infinitive with try; try and keep this in mind.
5. Do not use slang; your grade will be history.
6. Do not forget to always use the possessive form of a pronoun before a gerund; I can envision you having to rewrite your paper.
7. Do not end a sentence or clause with a preposition; be familiar wtth the rule I am talking about.
8. Make sure that all pronouns agree with respect to person and case; a student should know their grammar rules. .
9. Do not use words if you are not absolutely sure of their meaning; this may seem innocuous enough, but lack of obviation will only exacerbate the problem, and give your paper a mendacious quality.
Please remember that this is a letter not a research paper. .The correct format for incorporating your sources into your paper is using quotations not footnotes or endnotes.
The form to be followed for this paper. Salutation: The Honorable John Culberson
Address
Greeting: Dear Representative Culberson: Introduction: Start your letter with your thesis;
We must allow stem ceil research not only to continue but also to expand.
Body: Make your case in this part of the letter reinforced by using your research material.
Conclusion: Restate your thesis and urge the official to take some action on your behalf.
Position Paper:
the position paper is to be three pages in length. You are to choose a issue of contemporary importance, national, state or local, and write a letter to an elected representative to try to persuade him/her to take some action on that issue. The action can be to vote for it (or against it) if it is coming up for a vote, to bring the issue up so that it can be introduced, to provide additional funding for it (or decrease or eliminate funding for it), etc.
Sources:
This paper/letter is your opinion on some issue. However, you need to substantially reinforce your position wjth someone etse's opinion or resources. To that end, you must provide three legitimate sources that concur wit) your position. These sources must be quoted in your paper.
Format for quoting from the sources:
The proper format for this paper, since it is a letter, is to identify the author and the resource from which your quote was taken. For example if you find an article in Time Magazine that supports your thesis, and the article was written by Bob Smith, then in your paper you put, Bob Smith writing in Time said," xxxxxxxx."
Origin of sources: ,
All of the sources can be from the same type of resource, that is, it is permissible to use three different quotes from newspapers, magazines, or books. You may obtain all of your sources through the use of the internet. You may not however, use any internet address as a source. If, for example, you found the Bob Smith article through Yahoo, you would use Time Magazine as your source, not Yahoo. You may use any legitimate source. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is, do not use any source from the internet that is not published and authored.
Copies of sources:
When you turn in your paper, you are to provide copies of the sources from which your quotes were drawn. You need only provide the precise page from which your quote was taken. For example, if your source is a magazine article that is four pages long, and your quote comes from page two of the article, you need to provide a copy of page two only. You need not, and should not, provide all four pages. Additionally, the quote that you are using must be highlighted on the copy of the source you provide. Also, the sources/quotes are-to be submitted in the order in which they appear in your paper.
In conclusion, you are to provide only six pages to me, three of which are your letter, and three of which are copies of your sources, with the quotations used in your paper highlighted.
